THE number of people admitted to hospital with alcohol poisoning has shot up in the Lothians over the last decade.
Figures released by the Scottish Government show that last year 934 were diagnosed with illness and sent to hospital to be treated.

This is compared to 682 ten years ago, an increase of more than half.

The statistics showed that almost a quarter of those admitted were under the age of 24.

Public Health Minister Shona Robison said: "These figures are another reminder of the grip alcohol misuse has on Scotland.

"Alcohol misuse costs the NHS £2.25 billion each year.

"Our proposals to tackle the problem are bold. They include raising the off-sales alcohol purchase age to 21."

Tough.

Either learn to handle your drink or don't drink it.

It's nothing to do with me or anyone else who can handle their drink and should not result in any more laws or restrictions.

"Our proposals to tackle the problem are bold. They include raising the off-sales alcohol purchase age to 21."

No, your proposals are ridiculous and will serve only to target those who CAN handle their drink and have done no wrong.

Resign now Robison. You are an embarrassment to Scotland and your ideas are dangerous.

I completely agree with #1 and #3. The individuals in question have to begin to take some personal responsibility for these events. We are now a nation which spawns people who drink too much, end up in hospital and blame the off licence that sold them the drink! Blame the bar for serving them when drunk, but never seem to blame themselves. Why should the entire nation have to see a law change because a few people drink to excess? There is also the assumption that all those being admitted to hospital are under 21. I would put a large bet on this not being the case. You only have to look at the hen do's in Edinburgh to see that the older generations in a family are just as badly behaved as the younger one's. I had the misfortune of witnessing a lady falling out of a limo a few weeks ago, staggeringly drunk on a hen night, and she wasn't the hen, she was the hen's granny and must have been at least 60 year's old - it was the most pathetic sight I have ever seen. At least if you see a young person hammered you could almost blame it on niaviety, but the older generations have little or no excuse for this kind of behaviour.

Alzheimers or dementia shouldn't be a major problem in Scotland. Many would not even notice the transition!

#5 Dragonhead,Dalian,Red China - "Alzheimers or dementia shouldn't be a major problem in Scotland" - Seems to have taken it toll on you though - this would go some way to explaining your "anger issues.
