USING certain vitamins and supplements does not reduce the risk of cancer, two major studies suggested last night.
Researchers in the United States, studying tens of thousands of patients, found that vitamins E and C, and the mineral selenium, offered no significant protection against cancer.

The results, published in the Journal of the American Medical Associ
ation, appear to contradict the widespread belief that taking vitamins or antioxidant minerals such as selenium can reduce cancer risk.

Although some previous studies have suggested that some of these supplements may have anti-cancer properties, definitive proof has so far been lacking.

In the larger of the studies, more than 35,000 men from the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico were randomly assigned to take either selenium, vitamin E, both selenium and vitamin E, or a placebo.

Although a follow-up period of up to 12 years was originally planned, the study was stopped early by an independent monitoring committee due to the lack of benefit observed. Among the four groups, no statistically significant difference was seen in rates of prostate cancer. In fact, the placebo group had the lowest incidence of cancer.

The other study involved 14,641 male physicians from the US aged 50 or older. Participants received different combinations of vitamin C, vitamin E and a placebo.

During an average follow-up period of eight years, 1,943 cancers were confirmed among the men, including 1,008 cases of prostate cancer.

But neither vitamin reduced the risk of prostate or total cancer by any significant degree. Nor was any significant protective effect seen against specific cancers including bowel, lung, bladder and pancreatic cancers.

The researchers, led by Dr Michael Gaziano, from the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, said: "These data provide no support for the use of these supplements in the prevention of cancer in middle-aged and older men."

In an editorial in the journal, Dr Peter Gann, of the University of Illinois in Chicago, described the findings as "disappointing news".

Both studies had been launched on a "wave of hope" after earlier research hinted that vitamin E or selenium might help prevent cancer, he said.

Dr Jodie Moffat, health information officer at Cancer Research UK, said: "There are a lot of studies looking at whether vitamin and mineral supplements can reduce the risk of cancer but many of them, like this one, don't support a link.

"This new research means it is even less likely than we previously thought that supplements can protect against prostate cancer."

Well during the second world war, us kids got orange juice, cod liver oil and agarol (a mild laxative). Plus of course milk. Never killed anyone. Glasgow kids seemed to suffer occassionally from rickets, rumoured from lack of milk. A bloody shame especially for the girls. Taking vitamins to cure cancer, you're safer taking Berocca to cure a hangover.

#2, you have almost hit the nail on the head, the vitamin that does prevent cancer is vitamin D, the very one that is in cod liver oil, dairy, butter, fish, and meat and the best and greatest source of all....natural sunshine. Skin cancer rates have soared since the advent of sunscreen, why, because the vit D cannot be made that protect the skin. Other cancers have also soared, why, because of the fad of eating vegetable oils and cutting out dairy and basing the diet on wheat based products all of which cut our consumption or manufacturing base (cholesterol) of vit D and also strip any that is stored, a double edged sword. Today's 'healthy' diet is the source of 90% of modern disease. Change it for a natural one and live.

My endocrinologist has prescribed for me some special vitamin supplements because of a medical condition but she say a well-balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle that includes daily exercise of at least 30 minutes should keep one healthy.

She also, darling lady, wants me to drink two glasses of red wine ( I prefer Shiraz) with me meal or as a nightcap.

So......eat a healthy and well-balanced diet, exercise, drink alcohol in moderation and you just might escape the cancer "bullet".

Then you get run over by an eighteen-wheeler and all you efforts have been obliterated - along with yourself.

Daily multi-vitamin & mineral tablets + lutein (marigold) + hawthorn + omega6+3+9 (flax oil, etc.) + occasionally calcium with VitD + boiled potatoes to provide bulk + milk.

I'll send a message from the grave if it doesn't work.

Oh, and I forgot the daily bowl of muesli, lunch of chicken or lamb with brussel sprouts, beans, topped by a sandwich at night.

And occasionally an apple, piece of lettuce, and fifty cups of coffee and tea randomly spaced throughout the day.

There are many studies that suggest otherwise - I'm not going to argue the point - debunking these theories keeps doctors in business and its very big business indeed.
After losing several family members to cancer and seeing how the NHS treats them I'm inclined to think that building up the body's health is better than destroying it with chemo, radiation or other allopathic methods like surgery! If that includes vitamins and minerals then that's fine - they certainly do less harm than the medical profession.
Interestingly in the 90's the BMA published findings that when doctors go on strike the rate of deaths decrease (Greek study as reported by the society of morticians) and in the US more people die from exposure to the medical profession than from gunshot wounds!!
Intensive farming has left us all mineral depleted too, over 75% of us are low in magnesium which is one of the reasons why we also have such high fatality rate when it comes to heart disease.

Yet, the other thread on the Scotsman says a pint a day raises your cancer risk by 20%. Who can keep up?
