THE millionaire businessman Brooks Mileson, who took Gretna Football Club from the Third Division to the SPL and the final of the Scottish Cup in barely five years, died yesterday.
The 60-year-old was found unconscious at his home in Blackford, near Carlisle, yesterday morning.

It is understood that Mr Mileson, who had been suffering from a serious neurological problem, collapsed in the grounds of his home. He was taken to Cumberland Infirmary, where he later died. Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

His death brings to an end one of the most colourful and controversial chapters in Scottish football.

A philanthropist businessman who had given financial support to 70 football clubs, Mr Mileson was perhaps an unlikely football club owner. The devout Christian and animal lover he was happy to sort out match takings into English and Scottish notes for his local bank.

Mr Mileson will be best remembered for taking the small team from Dumfries and Galloway on a journey fitting of a Hollywood film plot, before he had to abandon the club suddenly to penury and liquidation as ill health forced him to withdraw his financial backing.

The club's collapse was almost as spectacular as its rise. Gretna resigned from the Scottish Football League in June this year before being pushed into administration two months later, as its benefactor cut off its financial lifeline and it was revealed the club was £4 million in debt.

Last night, Mick Wadsworth, the former Gretna director of football, said: "He was such a giving person, he was very kind to everyone who came across him, it's terrible news. I really feel for his family and everyone that was close to him. The poor guy has been ill on and off for two years but it has still come as a real shock."

The club's former chairman Ron MacGregor, also paid tribute. He said: "I think most fans will choose to remember the fantastic ride he gave them up to the Scottish Cup and the SPL, rather than any of the later problems."

The businessman first helped the club in 2002, pumping much-needed cash into the side. It is estimated he invested £8 million, paying players salaries rarely seen outside the Premier League.

The club won promotion to the Second Division in 2004-5 and to the First Division the following season, when Gretna also reached the Scottish Cup final, eventually losing to Hearts on penalties. But as the team reached the SPL in 2007, Mr Mileson's health was beginning to slip.

Having undergone bowel surgery in 2006, he was visibly frail at Gretna's moment of glory when the team beat Ross County to secure a place in the top flight of Scottish football.

Meanwhile, life in the SPL proved difficult. A ground-sharing deal with Motherwell proved financially costly, while victories were hard to come by.

Last night fans paid tribute to Mr Mileson on community websites. Barbara Thomson, of South Queensferry, wrote of him: "A proper gentleman, sleep peacefully Brooks."

I suspect the eccentric, modest, and philanthropic Mr. Brookes Mileson will long be remembered for accomplishing
the impossible with Gretna Football Club, in stark contrast to the officials of some other clubs, who use their privileged position to amplify misinformation in the media.

A sad day for the real football fan
He was a lovely kind man who cared for the fan and his love of animals was also a credit to this great guy

He was willing to put his own money into helping his local club without expecting any financial gain

Why didn`t he ensure the financial longevity of the club prior to his death?

#4 - have a heart. I'm sure if he was able and well enough, he'd have done so. Just remember him as a fan who was able to live out the dream and let hundreds of others join him.

He was only in it for the short term publicity stunt. When the going got tough he pulled the plug, made players and management redundant and the club folded. His legacy to the club should have been long-term financial security.

A great shame, and he did achieve great things for Gretna. However, those great things were brief, and fatal for the club. Long term financial security would have benefited the club far more, I think. As for acheiving the impossible with Gretna, I think any small football club could have done just as well given similar investment.

The vitriol that you encounter in the east is all to do with football, not things that happened in another country many years ago

I had a lot of respect for Mr Mileson. A true football fan who cared for his local club, and had the means to help and did. It's sad that some of the comments left here reflect all that is bad with this country.

Mr Mileson supported his LOCAL club, some comments left here are from "supporters" who follow a club miles away from their home, and for all the wrong reasons.

R.I.P. Brooks Mileson. If only there were more like you.

#8 Typical rankers supporter, trying to do a good man down.Brooks Mileson was all that was good about Scottish football. You and the club that you claim to support are all that is bad about Scottish football.

The efforts of this man and his club were a credit to the game in Scotland. Oh and please dont try and join the EPL,as Jay Dee #19 points out,you are not wanted in England.

Can't blame Brooks (is heaven full of smokers standing at the gate chatting to St. Peter? God rest his kippered heart) BUT... we should question the system that consigns the diddy clubs to either obscurity or a few moments of glory thanks to an eccentric philanthropist. Can't they (we) find a more equitable and sustainable way to boost the chances of a minnow swimming with the whales, football-wise?

Brooks Mileson was a great supporter of football trusts, and not just Gretna.
He contributed money to the trusts of both Dundee and Dundee United to enable them to buy shares in their respective clubs.
He was a football altruist, not a narrow-minded bigot.

Castigated for not supporting your local club? Probably the fundamental problem with the game in Scotland. Never thought I would see an Old Firm poster say that.

Well said. I didn't know he had contributed to Dundee, but he donated a substantial sum to ArabTrust to help fans buy shares in Dundee United. A thoroughly decent bloke who did his best by everyone, even if things didn't always work out as he would have wanted them to in the end. Puts Murray to shame, although it's not as if Murray needs any help in that regard.
