A GROUP of MPs yesterday called on the UK government to provide extra cash to upgrade Glasgow's transport network in time for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
A delegation from the cross-party Scottish affairs committee visited sites in the city to determine where extra money could be spent if it were granted.

They will now press Jim Murphy, the Scottish Secretary, to fund improvements to Dalmarnock an
d Bridgeton rail stations in the city's east end, as well as the city's subway system.

The committee also suggested developing a smart-card system similar to the Oyster card used on public transport in London.

The card could be used to provide Games spectators with free public transport to and from venues.

The delegation, led by Glasgow Central MP Mohammed Sarwar, insisted that the investment was necessary if the Games were to provide the city with a "lasting legacy".

Scotland is due to lose £150 million in lottery money in the next three years due to the reallocation of funds to the London Olympics in 2012.

The £375 million budget for the Games is already in place, with 80 per cent being met by the Scottish Government and the remainder by Glasgow City Council.

Mr Sarwar said: "We strongly feel that to give the best impression of Glasgow and Scotland, additional funding will be required to upgrade transport routes.

"The last thing we want is to give people a shabby image of Glasgow."

Alistair Watson, chairman of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, said: "If we want more of a legacy, additional funds will be needed. The last refurbishment of Dalmarnock and Bridgeton stations was 30 years ago."

The committee refused to be drawn on how much money they would be asking Westminster for, although Mr Watson said that the initial £200 million provided by the Scottish Government to develop Games sites was "small beer compared with what will be needed".

He added: "Transport infrastructure does not come cheap."

Jim Devine, Livingston MP and a member of the committee, dismissed suggestions that the government would be reluctant to endorse such heavy expenditure in the current economic climate.

He said: "When the Prime Minister and President (Barack] Obama talk about financial stimulus, these are exactly the kind of projects that we are talking about.

"We are obviously not asking for an open chequebook, but the regeneration of the east end of Glasgow is long overdue."

There will be nobody at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

So why do they need a transport upgrade?

"So why do they need a transport upgrade?"

Lets put that question to Labour and ask them why Edinburgh needed a £500M (and now rising steeply ) "road to nowhere" tram system.

Answers on a postcard....

Do'nt worry boys and girls, the Referendum result on INDEPENDENCE next year will allow SCOTLAND to fund her own games. Money from our abundance of natural recourses and other activities, will insure that the SCOTS will put on a great show. WE WILL NOT BE BANK-ROLLING THE BANKRUPT english government anymore....
Rufis will not be there, peace at last.

The unionists believe the english Olympics will benefit Scotland. Do the unionists also believe the Scottish Commonwealth games will benefit england?.
Why not?.

Liam,

You cannot use the excuse of what will be an ill-attended and very brief sporting event to demand untold millions in transport improvements.

Besides, there are deserving transport projects right across Scotland. Why is it always Glasgow demanding the lot?

9

john z,

Here is the problem.

Why are Scottish taxpayers helping to fund the London Olympics, but English tax payers are not helping to fund the Glasgow Commonwealth games??

As the recession worsens, all we see is money getting poured into the South East of England, whilst money is pulled from Scotland.

14 billion for the London Olympics, where according to Seb Coa, 75p in every pound is being used to re generate London, yet No MONEY for the Forth Bridge in Scotland.

Answers on a postcard please.

What a wasteful english union. Time for Scotland to stand on its own two feet, so money from Scottish taxpayers is actually spent IN SCOTLAND.

Just for perspective;

The total annual budget for the Scottish government is around 30-33 billion pounds.

The amount of money being spent in London for the olympics is probably going to be well over 14 billion pounds.

As our american chums like to say - 'you do the math'.

Time for independence. Let's get rid of this wasteful english union.

The A9 has been waiting 20 YEARS to be built as it was spec'd

It was a Glasgow Party finnace minister who cut the A9 funding

Now Glasgow wants (demands even .........)
More transport spending

When will the Government fund all parts of the country fairly and equally ???????

The Glasgow party make a big issue about giving racist the red card

So why can't the give fair spending on transport also ?????????

What really gets me here is that the Lib Dems on HiTrans take all the expenses and say NOTHING about this....

That really burns me up.......

I guess the real question is if Westminster spends money to save Car industry and steel industry jobs, how will they put a similar proportion into Scottish jobs.
This is different from the Bank financing, it is actually geography based.

American chums who fought thier own war of Independence to break the the Union. Did them no harm insofar as they are the World largest super power.

How do you feel about the Bank of Ireland underwriting Post Office savers savings? i.e. the Euro propping up part of the UK economy?

#15, what is transport spending, or all spending, per head in different parts of Scotland? And revenue?

What is the requirement for Olympic or Commonwealth Games coming in at eye-watering amounts when people can't pay their fuel bills and the country is broke? Fiddling while Rome burns indeed.
17

Boab1,

27/01/2009 09:33:42
This will not happen. As the Treasury have already told us, they don't spend money for the future (especially when it's Glasgow we're talking about. They can take the voters for granted there and rely on the Daily Record to tell the unthinking and ill-informed majority that it's the SNP's fault, if they're still in government).

I'm confused they want to see improvement in the Dalmarnock and Bridgeton rail stations. Do they no relaise that these two stations are relitively close to one another. In fact only 5min bus jurney away from one another, 10mins if the traffics busy and 30mins if a group of the locals are out taking thier flags for a walk.

You would think by these suggestions that they where at opiste ends of Glasgow but thier right beside one another.

I also noticed an absence of the usual p*** taker(s)now is that just a coincidence ? Is it because we don't have a Scottish Government or SNP article ?
They get their "Jollies" on these forums by egging on the SNP supporters but do not declare any political preference because they are afraid to commit themselves.
I think it is funny with the same person(s) using different user names and answering their own comments, changing to another user name when they cannot get any takers.Desperate stuff.

As each of the new stations on London's Jubilee line cost twice as much as the Scottish Parliament building, a bit of refurb. at two East-end stations does not seem a lot to expect.
Does anyone know what the improvement of the transport infrastructure for the London Olympics is supposed to cost?

17. Smee and American Independence

I believe the americans said this to your union.....

"....Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpation's, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security......"

That'll be why a nationalist government has been voted into office in Wales and moves are afoot to broaden the scope of devolution in Wales then.

Thanks for the update from our celtic fringe cousins.

I must say, I didn't realise that you were all for furthering the devolution settlements of the smaller nations in the UK.

At which point do unionists say 'stop no further'?

Do you support Scottish MP's voting on English only matters?

I take that you fully support the reduction of Scottish MP's to 59 after 2010?

That's the thing about a union smee, it must be equal or not at all.

I'll be voting for 'not al all'

More than any other party. it would seem.

So from your answers above we're getting a picture of your tory leanings.

But you haven't answered my questions about further powers.

Are there any you think would be better dealt with at a Scottish level?

Revenues?

#30 VOTING SNP WHO WORK FOR SCOTLAND .SAOR ALBA: What are you on? I'm confused? Lately I've rarely been on this site and I'm unware of argueing with you.

I'm feeling low today, so I make a joke about the time I was stuck on bus for 1/2 an hour between Bridgen and Dalmanock road. Because there where people walking on the road with flags. It was very furstrating haveing your bus move so slowly, I wish there had be a divertion.

I've been on bus that goes by this route many times and it normaly there only about five mins between passing Dalmarnock train station and Bridgeden station.
