STIMULUS is one of those neutral, unexceptional words that is suddenly appropriated by politicians and debauched, so that ever after it will have connotations that are sinister, ironic and sleaze-ridden. Barack Obama's "stimulus" plan will be long remembered as the occasion when political euphemism triggered economic disaster.
There is no terminology available to express adequately the appalling irresponsibility of this naked political banditry. To have squandered a fraction of the near-$1 trillion cost of Obama's pork barrel in days of prosperity would have been more tha
n reprehensible; to do so at a time of financial crisis is unforgivable. Obama likes to pose as the heir of Abraham Lincoln: as this shameless bribery demonstrates, he is heir only to the Chicago Democrat political machine that spawned him.

Where is the stimulus to the economy from throwing $6bn at colleges and universities, many of which, unlike their British counterparts, already have billion-dollar endowments? Or in throwing $1bn at Amtrak, a railway re-enactment society that will appeal only to those nostalgic for the masochistic pleasures of British Railways? Or in the more modest $100m being squandered on reducing lead-based paint?

Even the temporary boost that such ploys as spending $5.5bn on the "greening" of federal buildings may give the construction industry have been blunted, at least in the Senate bill, by omitting the E-Verify mandate that was in the House bill. This would allow an estimated 300,000 illegal aliens to parasite on construction jobs; they are even awarded tax breaks in another part of the package.

To call this spendthrifts' wish list a "stimulus" is an insult to America's intelligence. Instead, it is a hotch-potch of politically correct liberal obsessions: $75m to promote "smoking cessation" (that will stimulate retailers); a $246m tax break for Hollywood trash merchants; and even an extra $300m medical appropriation to treat Casanovas who, in the coy euphemism, have been kissing girls with runny noses.

The most blatantly sinister item is the allocation of $4.2bn to "neighbourhood stabilisation", the programme that will enrich the far-left organisation ACORN which played so controversial a role in voter registration during the recent presidential election. In tandem with that goes $1bn to forward Obama's ambition to control the 2010 census, rich in electoral opportunity for the promoters of the one-party state.

This pork barrel is open and stinking. Senate majority leader Harry Reid had concerns about re-election, so he lobbied Obama and was duly gifted $8bn to develop high-speed rail lines between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Presumably easier access for punters to Sin City is designed to stimulate the economy. New York Democrat senator Chuck Schumer insouciantly claimed last week that the American people really don't care about "little tiny, yes, porky amendments".

The plummeting support for Obama's confidence trick – down to 37% in one poll – suggests that they do care. They will care even more when they see this toxic package within the context of America's overall indebtedness. That context is what makes the difference between writing off the stimulus as a piece of irresponsible, but ultimately affordable, Keynesian self-indulgence and recognising it as a supreme act of folly.

Firstly, there is the poisoned heritage from the Republicans. The Bush administration, in its last six years, ratcheted up deficits totalling $3.35 trillion. No wonder these pseudo-conservatives were repudiated by their voters. All the more reason for Obama, the new broom, to shame their memory with a policy of fiscal frugality. Instead, he has committed himself to programmes that will record a cumulative budget deficit of $8.4 trillion by 2017.

For do not forget that Timothy Geithner, the Treasury Secretary who displays a boyish unfamiliarity with tax returns, is standing by to throw a further $2.25 trillion at banks. If you add up the US government's commitments, the sums are: Federal Reserve, $5.5 trillion; Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, $1.5 trillion; Treasury, $947bn; Federal Housing Administration , $300bn – total $8.34 trillion. There is, however, one key component missing: the costs of nationalising Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which adds $5 trillion, producing the grand total of $13.3 trillion.

No wonder Barack Obama, bereft of his auto-cue, was uncharacteristically hesitant at his press conference last week. The messiah has to borrow $3.5 trillion over the next two years. This could prove a burden that even the legendarily resourceful and productive citizens of the United States cannot shoulder.

Who cares if the package is 'leftish' or 'politically-correct' or any of those other epithets that right wingers have became obsessed with? The only thing that matters is whether or not it will work, and quite frankly, at this point, no-one can possibly say for certain.

Unlike the bankrupt UK, the world's only true superpower will weather the current economic downturn, and when it emerges, it will be back to business!

The business of America is business!

#1 Tax and spend will not work. It was wrong for Bush to overspend by such an enormous amount and it is even wronger for Obama to do so.

#3 Not if the politicians keep taxing and spending. America cannot defy the laws of economics any more than any other country can.

For two years the American press has not critiqued nor investigated this Chicago thug, Barry Soetoro, aka fauxBama.

Of course this all has been "tried before." Marx, Hitler, Mussolini, Chavez, Castro, Muhammed, name your favorite tyrannical ideologue.

The result will be war, death, destruction, and then re-building from the mess.

Europe should be asking: why is the American press media propping up this puppet? Read some American press. They are not only AVOIDING critiquing Soetoro, they are blatantly COVERING for him and his policies.

This recent legislation is trumpeting simply as, "a great legislative victory for President Obama." Nothing ABOUT the legislation. 1100 pages that nobody has read....the press made no effort.

They couldn't...care...less.

The Media Lies. Amerca Dies.

#2, Cynicus writes:

"Quantitative easing, I fear, is about to subvert the Great Republic."

The Vietnam War was, arguably, financed in retrospect by the printing of US dollars in the 1970s. Syncronised currency debasements followed in her trading partners to mitigate the protectionist effects of the falling dollar. Locally, we overdid things and the outcome was The Great Heath-flation of the 1970s.

The Iraq/Afghan Wars and their financial counterparts, the credit bubble and bank crashes are going to be financed the same way. This time round, though, the sums are far vaster and something between the near 30% "Heathflation" of the 70s and 3000 million Weimar inflation of the 20s might be expected. If it gets really bad, there might be a career opening for Robert Mugabe's finance minister as adviser to Chancellor Ken Clarke.

(BTW, Cynicus, keep up the good work on this site. Our old friend Usconbuts asks for you and I took the liberty of passing to him the email address you published during the "identity-theft" controversy last year. Expect to hear from him.)

Newton_Invented_Gravity: Anyone with even the most rudimentary knowledge of history and economics knows that this socialist's wet dream of a pork package WON'T WORK. Understand? IT WON'T WORK.

If its real intent is realized, however, it will entrench Democrats for generations to come as it creates an enormously expanded dependent-class whose only solution to a problem is to wet themselves and whine to the government for assistance. Wake up and smell the socialism!

I think we can say for certain this pork plan will have massive long-term negative unintended consequences. Whether it will work short-term to give the economy a bit of infusion is the only uncertainty. So, even if it has some short term success it will ultimately need to be judged over the long haul.

I firmly believe whenever you have the choice between massive government spending verses empowering individuals and the private sector, you always go with the private sector. The reason why is quite simple. Thats precisely how we built this great country and in contrast no great nation has ever been built on the brilliance of goverment spending and control of markets.

I find it incredible that people in this country have so little knowledge of history that they are willing to allow our leaders to repeat the mistakes of the past and the failures of nations long since forgotten.

another point is why are Republicans complaining so bitterly about the stimulus package, yet hardly a whimper is heard from them about the bail out? It would seem that 'pork' for the wealthy is fine but not for the poor.

The surface economics aside, this "stimulus" bill contains language that guts the welfare reform of the 90's and will put millions back into open-ended, nanny-state dependency, and health care provisions that will create a federal govt. dept. that will act as gate-keeper for health care for seniors. I spit on the U.S. "citizens" who put this Marxist in office (my brother and brother-in-law included), and on the Republican senators who voted for it. Good-bye Sweet America.

For all you British Isles people wondering what is going on over here in our educational system to make us all stupid-ified... history is not properly taught, and like other posters have said, the media is untrustworthy, and more of us are going to foreign news sites to learn of OUR OWN country's events. I have to fix my Boy Scouts, as the politically-correct Columbus Public Schools only teaches the Holocaust and Slavery (lesson: white men are inherently evil), so one of the boys told me. Weimar Republic? They'll have never heard of it. Most don't know who Gordon Brown is, and they are told that the EU is the greatest invention since the wheel (and I understand many of you would disagree). Students are told of our constitution's 2nd Amendment (right to bear arms) is about hunter's rights, when the idea was that we could overthrow the government if it ever became oppressive. By the way, didn't Hitler outlaw private firearm ownership in germany in the 30's? I'm just throwing it out there.

So, I've been raised to be fiscally responsible all my life and avoid debt, right? I was going to take leave in Europe over my next deployment, and pump some Euros and Pounds into the respective economies, but... I guess not, if Obama is going to make me pay off an inconceivable debt (seriously, I can't even comprehend $787 billion, let alone multiple trillions)

Sorry, Europe - I wanted free-er trade and voted for Sarah Palin (screw McCain, he sold her down the river)

We here in the States have begun to joke that Obama is changing his middle name from Hussein to Hindenburg! On a more serious note, there is also a movement of rebellion growing wherein Americans pledge to boycott the U.S. federal income tax as a way to protest Obama's growth of government far outside the boundaries of our Constitution. For many of us it is 1776 all over again.

NightFire,

The purpose of this bill was not to rescue the economy, but to attempt to create a permanent Democratic majority by putting most voters on some government teat. If by some miracle the US economy recovers from this onslaught and the others coming shortly, Obama will take credit for it and urge more government to "make it even better." If not, he'll just blame it on George W. Bush, Republicans, conservatives, and global warming.
