WORK to tackle corrosion in the main cables of the Forth Road Bridge is being stepped up again after a winter shutdown.
Special platforms are being refurbished after being tied down for the last few months when strong winds presented a risk.

The platforms will be propelled to 150 metres to allow contractor C Spencer Ltd to resume sealing the cables in an airtight sheath.

Very dry air will then be blown inside the cable in an attempt to reduce the humidity to a level where corrosion cannot occur.

Barry Colford, chief engineer and bridgemaster, said: "We're determined to give ourselves the best possible chance of beating corrosion in the main cables.

"The team has worked extremely hard to get the project back on schedule.

"I'm confident in the dehumidification system we've developed.

"However, it must be stressed that there are no guarantees and we won't know how successful we've been until the system has been given time to work and the cable is re-inspected in 2011-12."

Therefore, wait until the results are known before taking the decision to blow £2billion of taxpayers money for the sake of a wee plaque saying "The Bridge that Alex Built" (although unfortunately he won't be arond to unveil it becuase his party will be boted out at the next election - now that's something I support).

#1 Indeed, the whole thing is designed to ensure that the second bridge is fully committed before the miraculous realisation that the existing one could have been repaired more quickly, more cheaply and with less disruption.

Barry Colford's comments (or actually, his PR team's comments) are pure politicking.

Two bridges. Increased maintenance costs. Increased pollution. Other public services cut back to pay for it. The renaming of the "Two Bridges Hotel" to the "Three Bridges Hotel" - I bet THEY get compensated !!

No, it should be paid for in the same way as other roads.
Yes, it’s fairer for users to bear the brunt of the cost.
Yes, as long as it was only for a fixed amount of time.
