EIGHT suspected Hearts and Hibs casuals are being quizzed by police today after dozens of officers swooped in a series of dawn raids.
As part of a crackdown on football violence following clashes after last month's Edinburgh derby, 30 officers raided nine addresses across the Lothians at 5am.

The raids, which took place in areas including Restalrig, Corstorphine, Howdenhall, Telford and Tranent, led to eight men aged between 20 and 40 being detained at a city centre police station for questioning.

The raids follow weeks of work carried out by a police task force, who have been viewing hundreds of hours of CCTV footage in order to identify thugs involved in street battles.

Up to 60 hooligans fought running battles in Lothian Road and Fountain Park following the Hibs v Hearts league fixture on October 15.

All eight have now been arrested and charged with offences including mobbing and rioting.

A police spokesman said: "This is the first wave of raids for detaining those suspects involved in disorder in Edinburgh city centre back on October 15 following the Hibernian v Heart of Midlothian football match.

"A squad of 12 officers has spent the last six weeks sifting through hours of CCTV footage to identify those responsible.

"There will be further raids over the coming weeks."

Police have also said that those responsible for the chaotic scenes in the city's streets last month could be hit with football banning orders, as well as potentially being put behind bars.

Other culprits involved in the violence are believed to range in age from teenagers to men in their 40s.

It is also believed that older hooligans who were part of the city's casual scene 20 years ago are now returning to be joined by younger men.

Police arrested 14 people in the hours following the game at Easter Road amid scenes including traffic cones being thrown through pub windows, fans clashing at Fountain Park and rubbish bins being hurled at police.

Both clubs have pledged their support for the crackdown on violence.

Congratulations are due to #4 for selecting a pen name that, judging by his pathetic attempt at trolling for bites, is completely absent of irony.

4# The word pleb springs to mind.

Its a strange world when people want to beat the crap out of each other for kicks, these guys brought terror to several parts of Edinburgh that day and deserve everything they get, which unfortunately will be nothing more than community service.

A little recreation?

Tell that to the ordinary people walking the same road. Mothers with small children, older people, teenage girls etc.
What would happen if during this 'recreation' a small child was hit with one of the missiles that was flying about.

These 'men' are attention seeking arseholes. i wonder if we put them all in the same cell they would fight each other.
Doubt it. No-one else there to impress.

13

chain,

no 4 is fishing. (its hugh jaas by the way!)

Thing is, it migh not seem like a lot of arrests but then this thing doesn't happen that often. There is that much CCTV that the people wanting to fight know they have to go elsewhere or else they will get a visit from the cops a few weeks later. I'd like to see a new tv programme 'Football Holigans to Gay Podium Dancers' where we take the firms from Hibs and Hearts, turn them gay and make them enter a podium dancing comp in ibiza!

well done to the police.
The romanovs were asking for it or didn't they arrest them?

for william d i know several from both sides and yes they would kick hell out of each other in a cell.its not attention seeking they have been kicking hell out of each other for years without it being in the papers.

Fair enough jc is god. I know a few myself.

Couldnae have been kicking each other that badly though..Theyre still here arent they.

Running about like wee laddies looking for a bit of excitement. I remember back in the 1980's. Half the thrill for them was getting into the papers and people talking about them. That is attention seeking.

Fair point, Billy. I've certainly slashed a few football supporters in my time, and it never did me any harm. I'm a high court judge now.

I'm very glad that the police in L & B are doing their jobs and stamping out these thugs. I would like to say that the same is said about the thugs in Strathclyde but unfortunately they still go about things the same way and treat any supporters outside the old firm as scum. I am appauled at the way the POLICE in the West of Scotland handle themselves and turn a blind eye.

Well done polis. The article says 8 arrested with more to come. That does make a difference dug catcher. Oh! Burglary happens in England not up here. also the article states 'up to 60' were involved. That's 30 a side. #4 you are a clown. These are NOT football fans but more likely to be of you ilk (that means type by the way). Check out the High Court. They are doing not a bad job with murderers, muggers and drug dealers too!

Franck,

SOMEWHERE OVER A RAINBOW 28/11/2006 19:33:48

Why is it that people think that the police are shite at catching these clowns, i've heard them try to explain their pish as a way of life. Lets be realistic. If that was the only way of life that they knew then they would be no more than mindless shite that pulls modern day living back to the days when horses and carts were common place.

They should have their doors opened in the early hours of the morning and they should be locked up. They are not football supporters and for anyone who thinks that it is good to gloat about slashing others with Stanley knives, well all i can say is enjoy your time. I hope you like the end of the baton. You're obviously heading for it.

And one last thing i think that #10 is incorrect. i can see where he is coming with the Hugh Jaas thingy but #4 is Hugh Janus, it is an occupational hazard after being locked up in HMP Saughton in the 80's bar of soap and all that.

Springers final thought. Go back to your stones fools. You are not wanted. Jail for them all.

29

Franck,

SOMEWHERE OVER A RAINBOW 28/11/2006 19:42:33

No i've not gone yet.

I was once told of a tibetan proverb.

It is better to have lived one day as a tiger than a thousand years as a sheep.

I can only think that the barbaric plebs running themselves into great excitement on that evening could be classed as the sheep. For they are too busy being organised by the sheep dog and the farmer, being told where to go, where to fight and with who.

You are all big, big men.

Go and meet the tiger. He's wearing a dashing shade of yellow and has got a baton in his hand.

ELM,

#32. I think you will find that the polis were right there in the thick of it. These idiots fight in high profile, well covered by CCTV areas for one reason. They want the polis to intervene just in case things go wrong and they end up on the wrong side of a doing. This happened hours after the game and was 'organised' by the 'elder' casuals. They could have made the place for the fight nearby Bruntsfield Links or the Meadows, where there is little CCTV. But no. Lets make it in the middle of one of Edinburgh's busiest roads. The polis will never find us fighting there. Not! You don't have to know the people involved. They are low intelligence, attention seeking scum. By the way. You will find the majority of them fight the fight from the rear of the pack. It's the real cannon fodder who are at the front. Brave men that lot.

Hysteria much???

The people who rioted during the G8 will recieve relativly mild sentences, compared to what anybody arrested for supposed "football offences" will. This, in a country that is ment to take pride in the quality of its justice system. An Asia youth kicks an elderly woman to the ground and shouts racist abuse in her face(reported in the Evening News recently) and gets a minimal fine, and a wee bit community service. The acts carried out on Oct 15th were ;

Mobbing(the riot act was repealed nearly 150 years ago), Criminal Damage, and some public order offences. Theses crimes by themselves carry a tariff of, at worst, 2 years in jail, but as soon as you group them into the catagory of "Football Offences", you are looking at 5-10 years.

Before I get branded a "Casual" by the small minded zealots, think about this, if you were to thump sombody outside Tynecastle straight after a match, you would be looking at either a fine upwards of £1000, or even 1 year in prison. At the very same time, sombody else is thumped in Leith links when Hibs are NOT playing at home, the perpatrator in this instance gets an £80 fine, and a conditional discharge.

I agree that it is good that the police are finally being seen to be doing their job, but it is about time that we had a system that meted out the correct punishment for all crimes, nit just the popular causes!!
