Killer salmon virus found at fourth Scots fish farm

A DISEASE that can kill salmon was yesterday confirmed at a fourth fish farm in Scotland.

The infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) virus was found in a controlled zone off Shetland, close to the farms where it was detected in January and March

A Scottish Government spokesman said that the farm will be depopulated as soon as practicable. This will be done by the farm owners, Hjaltland Sea Farms, under the supervision of the Fisheries Research Services to prevent the spread of the virus.

The controlled zone was set up on 2 January after the virus was found at an empty fish farm off Burra, in the south-west of Shetland. The disease was then confirmed at two other local sites, also owned by Hjaltland, on 31 January and 20 March.
