KATE Winslet, Brad Pitt and director Danny Boyle are vying for glory on Oscar night.

Double Golden Globe winner Winslet is nominated for best actress, in her role as a former concentration camp guard in The Reader.

Other British hopefuls include Boyle, the director of Slumdog Millionaire, which has received ten Oscar nominations, including best film.

The movie is competing for that prize with Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which has the most Academy Award nominations – 13.

Brad Pitt, who stars in Benjamin Button, has been nominated as best actor.

Boyle, who won a Golden Globe for best direction this month, said: "I'm ecstatic. It feels like a billion nominations."
