ACTORS and authors yesterday backed a campaign at Faslane to stop the replacement of the UK's nuclear weapons programme.
Roger Lloyd Pack, who starred in Only Fools and Horses and The Vicar Of Dibley, spoke out at an organised protest at the nuclear submarine base in Argyll.

He joined other artists, including author AL Kennedy and folk singer Leon Rosselson, to speak out against the government's decision to reinvest in a nuclear deterrent. The group performed at the Power of the Word event at Faslane, part of a year-long blockade of the naval base.

Describing the decision on Trident as "wrong, immoral and stupid", Lloyd Pack said: "When the existence of the planet is threatened by our assaults on our environment, it's madness to add to the danger by developing nuclear weapons. They're expensive, not safe, and we can never use them."

The Faslane365 campaign has seen protesters travel from all over the world to the gates of the base to voice their concern.

Thousands have taken part and more than 750 people have been arrested since the blockade started in October last year.

Police said five people were arrested at yesterday's protest for minor public order offences.

Your report doesn't say how many children were stopped from going to school yesterday by these protestors off the telly.

Meanwhile...

Key quote
"Russian relations with other developed western nations are at the lowest point since the end of the Cold War." - US think-tank

"...Mr Putin's, delivered on Sunday, was certainly striking, threatening to train Russia's nuclear missiles on European targets once again in protest at Mr Bush's plan for an anti-ballistic missile system partly based in Poland and the Czech Republic."

It's not over yet - and the Fat Lady has a sore throat.

Your report does not say how many children will never go to school if that thing is bombed or activated.

Seconded donald and Cadgers.

Also, it doesn't say how many schools won't get built or teachers hired because of the massive amounts of money wasted on Trident.

#3 #4 & #5, it also doesn't mention that it is possible to protest without completely ruining other ordinary people's lives. Ignorant and selfish protestors. You are not stopping or disrupting any military activity...you are though stopping plenty of civilians going about their private business. Once again, you are ignorant and selfish.

#6: The Scotsman article on the local residents suing the blockaders also failed to mention the fact that in the event of a blockade it is quite possible for the police to redirect base traffic so that non-base traffic can get through. This has been done for previous (non-Faslane 365) blockades, and has been demanded by the current blockaders.

Blocking the main road, so that nothing can get past, is a bit crazy; but when someone blockades the gates and the police refuse to redirect non-base traffic it's a very different situation.

The protesters should be rounded-up and shot.

We bought a System, not just the boats, for a cold war that questionally ever existed, but we have it. I favour the Libdem's proposal to maintain it rather Labour's desire for escalation and hideous expense. Or what would we have instead? V bombers back at Dounreay?

The submarine deterrent is tried and tested and I suggest it's other items of military aggression we could cut back. When the submarine's disappeared into the Ocean, it doesn't need supply lines, and the logistics of fortified camps in enemy territory. It's something to bring the table when China will soon be in the positition of calling the shots.
