AUSTRIANS rejected a candidate backed by right-wing firebrand Joerg Haider in a presidential election yesterday, picking instead an opposition Social Democrat.
With about 60 per cent of votes tallied, Heinz Fischer was predicted as the winner against foreign minister Benita Ferrero-Waldner.
