JACK McConnell will unveil plans today to root out sectarianism by getting children from Catholic and non-denominational schools to play football together, writes Hamish MacDonell.
The First Minister believes integrating extra-curricular activities of schools with different religious backgrounds will help to break down the prejudices and barriers of sectarianism.
He will announce proposals for "twinning" of schools. This could take the form of shared campuses, which has been pioneered in a number of areas, or a more flexible arrangement with the children coming together to play football, to take part in drama classes, or play music together.
An Executive spokeswoman said: "For young people, there are clear benefits in exposing them to different beliefs and backgrounds - with obvious opportunities to broaden their personal experiences."
