FESTIVAL-GOERS seeking tickets for the Edinburgh Fringe were frustrated yesterday as its internet booking system crashed on the first day of business.

Phone and box-office sales were also hit by delays as a new ticketing system ran into serious teething problems, a Fringe spokesman said.

"No tickets have sold on the web today. Phone and counter sales are also operating slowly," said a spokesm
an.

"We don't have any information on whether it will be operating tomorrow.

"It's really disappointing, but we are doing everything we can to sell tickets as normal, if not quicker in the future."

The Fringe sold 1.7 million tickets last year, and yesterday was the first day those for this year's August festival went on sale. It was unclear how many were sold.

The Fringe box office works a central ticketing system but sells only a limited share of tickets, with the venues accounting for the rest.

Earlier this year, the Fringe commissioned the Liquid Box Office system, from the Pivotal company, because the previous system had "reached its sell-by date", a spokesman said.

Websites operated by the four biggest venues at the Fringe – the Assembly, Underbelly, Pleasance, and Gilded Balloon venues – were operating as normal.

Why are "new" systems never fully tested before going online? The only real test is by TRYING to overload it deliberately. After that, it should all be quite copacetic!

WANT FRINGE TICKETS? - THIS WILL HELP YOU

Guess what? The fringe festival CANNOT SELL ANY TICKETS TODAY - by phone, counter or the website. Their whole ticketing system has failed (see message on their hopmepage).

The festival is worried about the breakaway of the four big venues. I say BREAKAWAY.

IF YOU WANT FRINGE TICKETS FORGET THE FRINGE AND CALL THE VENUES DIRECT(details below to help you).

This is the death knell for the formal fringe festival and I for one want to know who has resigned over the problem with the new ticketing system.

Lots of unhappy people on the fringe message boards:
http://www.edfringe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=48667

What a terrible terrible embarrassment and slur on all those involved in the festival, the city and Scotland. What could be worse for the festival than this? The lesson - AVOID whichever I.T. company did their new ticketing system.

For tickets, try contacting the big venues direct - details are as follows:

www.gildedballoon.co.uk 0131 668 1633 10am - 6pm

www.underbelly.co.uk 0844 545 8252 10am - 6pm

www.pleasance.co.uk 0131 556 6550 10am - 6pm

www.assemblyfestival.com 0131 623 3030 10am - 6pm

Good luck

20something, how are you trying to buy tickets? We just bought some for Joan Rivers and it was fine.

#5, maybe they've fixed it. I'm not going to check it every 5minutes... am I?

And why, oh why, would you buy tickets for Joan Rivers? Especially at that price!
