Critics of Grand Theft Auto 'just like people who moaned about Elvis'

THE boss of Edinburgh video game company Rockstar North has said critics of the forthcoming Grand Theft Auto IV title are "the same kind of people who complained about Elvis".
Leslie Benzies, the president of the Capital-based firm, made the claim amid waves of protest aimed at the game, which is due to be released tomorrow.

But father-of-one Mr Benzies has shrugged off the criticism. The 37-year-old said the Grand Th
eft Auto games were victims of the same kind of misplaced moral panic that had greeted the early days of rock'n'roll.

He added: "There is a big fear factor here. It's (like) the coming of the railways, it's Elvis shaking his hips. It's cars going over 25 miles per hour and making people explode. We've had such a beating over the past three years, by the US government, the British government, the Daily Mail. 'You kill prostitutes' – that's usually the objection. I ask if they've ever played the game. Invariably they haven't."

The firm recently had to win a fight to have another of its titles, the ultra-violent horror game Manhunt 2, released in the UK. Mr Benzies added: "We wanted to make a horror game that would scare you in the same way a film would. If it's a film or a book, you can do what you want. We seem to be in a different category. We're very careful who we market the game to, and what is in the game."

Grand Theft Auto IV is the latest instalment in a series which has already sold more than 70 million copies. It will have an 18 certificate and is expected to take £200 million worldwide in its first week.

The original Grand Theft Auto was condemned by the Police Federation as "sick, deluded and beneath contempt" while subsequent versions have been criticised by parents and protest groups, due to their depiction of drug-dealing, murder and prostitution.

US Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton has accused Rockstar of "stealing the innocence of our children and making the difficult job of being a parent even harder".

Mr Benzies' reaction comes after top neuroscientist Baroness Greenfield, said yesterday that the rush of continually winning and losing at computer games produces "hits" of dopamine – a euphoria-inducing chemical that has also been linked to drug dependency. She added the long-term result could be damage to a part of the brain that is key to forming personality.

However, another leading neuroscientist, Stafford Lightman, professor of medicine at Bristol University, says there is "no evidence at all" for Baroness Greenfield's theory about the longer-term personality effect.

He's quite right. Those who are moaning about this game should get a life and stop trying to stick their noses into other people's business.

Oh for the good old days of the Saturday cinema matinee films where the US army used to slaughter hundreds of native americans.

You can still catch them on many of the TV channels

The double standards applied to critics of computer games is ludicrous. It's fine for films to show endless violence, books to describe it in detail, and religions to promote genocidal slaughter in the name of love and peace. But computer games are spoiling our youth? Get real!

Hilary is right, I was allowed to watch Tom & Jerry as a child, I now have the tendency to hit people over the head with a frying pan, stolen innocence indeed!

Funny how you should mention that...

Since I bought the Blues Brothers and the Italian Job on DVD, I have noticed that I can jump into my black and white Dodge Monaco, commit whatever traffic offences I like and always get away with it. The cops can never catch me!

If things look really dodgy though, I'll jump into my Mini Cooper, which always seems to have a boot load of gold bullion, and drive down the steps of the church and into the nearest sewer.

my 10 year old son has been playing video games since he has been old enough to hold a joy pad.i for one,as a responcible parent,am eagerly awaiting the release of gta and shall decide, after ive played it,if its suitable for my son to play.he sees alot worse on the tv and the news before the watershed and is,at this moment in time, sniping people online playing cod4......you know what, hes bloody good at it,just like hes bloody good at school and sports........no doubt the pc brigade and tree huggers will want their 5 mins of moaning(as usual)im just keeping my fingers crossed that rockstar will make a game about over fishing the planet, killing dolphins and increase the earths temp.......that should send the pc brigade into overdrive....TREE HUGGERS....IF YOU DONT LIKE WHATS IN THE BOX,DONT BUY IT,OPEN IT AND PLAY IT!!!!

I think there should be more video games which depict gruesome rapes, mass murder and torturing kittens with a fork. I would really enjoy playing these games, though only as a bit of harmless fun.

I'm not quite sure what Grand Theft Auto is but I think I'll ask my secretary to purchase a copy if for no other reason than to annoy Harridan Hillary.

Ive been playing GTA IV for the past 3 days and i find it hard to put down the controller! Its clearly one of the best games EVER! - People who moan about GTA being violent or such should get a life and put their head back in the sand

#13 Don't worry! You're not really alone. The pc brigade have all gone away. And tree huggers are in their beds and won't come and scratch on your windows while you try and sleep. Perhaps you've been playing too many violent computer games?
I'm just peed off that it willnae play on the PS 2. Bah.

I can't believe playing this game can do more damage to the youth of today, than say, listen to hours of James Blunt...

Now there IS an idea for a game, you get control of all of the armies of the world, James Blunt gets a 10 minute head start and a spacehopper, then you get to go after him, actually, does that have to be a game???
