School learns of speed zone

SPEED restrictions are to be put in place around a city secondary school, it has been announced.
Traffic around Leith Academy is to be limited to 20mph. The restriction will apply at the times when pupils and teachers enter and leave the school.

Roads in the new zone include Academy Park, Easter Road, Gordon Street, Lochend Road and Primrose Street.

Leith councillor Gordon Munro said he was happy the limitations were being put in place. He said: "If slowing the traffic here means preventing an injury or saving a life, it vindicates the zone."

Why is this news? I was under the impression that this was being done at all schools.

However, watching the speedo like a hawk isn't going to save any lives. Only being alert is going to achieve that.

I always treat the flashing 20mph signs in the same way I used to treat vertical ambers---beware. I've got better things to devote my attention to than a speedo when driving through a hazardous area.

When are the ever going to drop this rediculous "speed kills" rubbish? It has been responsible for more deaths and serious injuries than any other "road safety" campaign in living history.

Another thing with road humps is that people pay more attention to hitting them centrally or avoiding them completely than they do on the road itself. The are a crash waiting to happen. I'm just waiting to hear of two cars piling head on into each other because they were both lining themselves up to hit the same speed bump centrally. It WILL happen. Mark my words.

We're not talkng about speed bumps outside schools (thankfully). Essentially they are going to replace vertical flashing amber lights with flashing 20mph signs.
