THE new campus of a city university has been shortlisted for an national architecture prize.
Queen Margaret's East Lothian campus has been nominated for the Scottish Design Awards.

The £105 million eye-catching building outside Musselburgh has already been praised for its architectural qualities and environmental credentials.

It was designed by architects Dyer and was opened to students and staff last year.

The university's vice-principal, Rosalyn Marshall, said: "We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this award and are aware of the high standard of competition.

"Sustainability was at the centre of our brief from the outset and Dyer has succeeded in outperforming the education sector in that regard without compromising on the aesthetic qualities."

The building also received a rare "excellent" rating from the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method.

Why is modernisim praised when it is merely an excuse to put up with cheap, sh1t buildings?

It's a shame that "architectural qualities and environmental credentials" can win an award, while having a building and campus that simply doesn't provide the facilities required is ignored.

Environmental sustainability may be important, but surely sustaining courses at the university is more vital?

It's a mess ... ask anyone not on staff who has to use the place!

Evening News...get you facts right...Musselburgh is NOT a city..
QMU moved from 2 Edinburgh Sites to Musselburgh, which is within East Lothian Council Area.

Its a pluke on the Green belt.

Like Giant Shoe Boxes....eye catching not...who are these people who award these awards do they acutally visit the sites in question?

A big white box filled with the best ikea can offer, doors that aren't soundproof and hundreds of computers but still a daily fight over the limited classrooms available. It's all very shiny but not exactly innovative design. Or decent design.

Is this woman for real? Has anybody actually taken a look at the rear of this building - the side that Musselburgh Residents have to look at every day. It's a complete mess. If QMC win this award then it would not look good for the Scottish Design Awards credibility! Visitors to Musselburgh have described the building as: a Nuclear Power Station, a Prison and a decant block for Wester Hailes!

#7 Scotty is absolutely right. It doesn't look great from the bypass but looks bl--dy awful from Musselburgh. More like an oil refinery.

It's much better inside though. It would have to be!
