BONALY Primary School pupil, 11-year-old Aoife Forbes was crowned the first ever winner of the Green Pencil Award for her creative writing.
Young writers were honoured at a grand ceremony at the Central Reference Library in Edinburgh on Friday.

Aoife beat off competition from more than 900 other children who submitted creative writing on a "green" or environmental theme.

Aoife wrote a haunting piece, Antarctic Waste, on the devastating effects of global warning.

She said: "I think this competition was a great chance for young people to write about really important environmental issues."

Glenda,

Why do parents insist on giving their kids daft names that only their friends and family know how to pronounce - once they've been taught?

Aoife is an Irish name pronounced Eefe. It's only a daft name to people who haven't watched The Vicar of Dibley - one of the blokes Geraldine fancied married an Irish lass and she (Geraldine) made a joke about her name pinching most of the vowels!!
Well done to Aoife for winning this award - good for you!!
