A MULTI-MILLION-POUND package of improvements is to be carried out on the streets around Edinburgh's new tram stops.
The £508 million tram scheme is expected to help regenerate a number of areas around the 22 stops and council chiefs are keen to ensure roads and pavements along the line are up to scratch.

Among the improvements being considered under the £12.5m
scheme are new public performance areas, trees, benches, signs, paths and pedestrian crossings.

Officials have warned that serious thought needs to go into redesigning the streets, saying Princes Street will "become worse than it is" for street clutter unless improvements are put in place for when the trams open.

The recent revamp of St Andrew Square Garden is seen by council chiefs as a good example of the success of renewing public spaces along the route between the airport and Newhaven. Officials have identified £2m worth of work along Leith Walk as the top priority, while a further £3m of improvements are needed for the West End to ensure it retains its traditional role as a city meeting place and shopping area.

The improvements are separate from the main tram budget and only around 20 per cent of the money has been found so far. It is envisaged that further developer contributions and bids to the Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise will help pay for the improvements. Traders and politicians said the investment was needed and presented a one-off opportunity to improve the city's streets.

Michael Apter, chairman of the West End Association, said: "It is great that the council are looking beyond just the tram line and its stops because the construction project really is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to improve the way the city is presented.

"If you take Coates and Atholl crescents for example, you have the opportunity to replicate the success of St Andrew Square garden – there are lots of ideas out there and £12m sounds like it will only be the start of it."

Dave Anderson, the council's director of city development, said there was a need to extend the basic tramway design to consider how it would interact with the surrounding roads and pavements. He added: "Using the tram as a catalyst for the early components of a wider and longer-term programme of urban public realm improvement is practical and effective."

Last year the city's design champion, Sir Terry Farrell, claimed the tram scheme will do "more harm than good" unless it is made more aesthetically pleasing. Mark McInnes, the city's Tory transport spokesman, said: "There are already significant problems in Edinburgh with street clutter and public realm and the tram project is an opportunity to address this. It is something the council should be thinking about anyway but the areas round the tram stops will open up and become more important once the line is in."

So is this part of the tram budget, or are council tax payers being stung again.

So basically TIE don't have the money to clean up the mess they are making at the moment then?

and the Edinburgh Taxpayer Money wasn't going to be contributing towards the Tram project.

Sounds like funding by the back door...bit of the old London Olympics comes to mind!

but only 20% has been found, amazing what you can find in your top drawer......£2.5m.....better go and check my top drawer....

Disgusting. They are making a lot of mess of the place at the moment and they are now stating that as there will be a mess, we are expected to find the money to clean it up.

Another £5M at the moment. Is someone personally keeping a total of these as they arrive? I'm sure the additional "requirements" will add up to a huge amount by the end of the tram works, around 2015...

So let me get this straight.....the feasability studies that were done for the trams never took the trams impact on it's surroundings into account. "Dave Anderson, the council's director of city development, said there was a need to extend the basic tramway design to consider how it would interact with the surrounding roads and pavements", nice job........how much were the consultants paid for this?

So in other words, they are going to carry out long-overdue repairs and enhancments.

Why bother with the trams? Just do the other work and return Edinburgh to the pre-Lazarowicz/Begg days.

I find myself having to agree with scallywag with this one, but there's a wee voice at the back of my mind warning me about sweets from strangers and what they might ask in return.

I also agree Disgrunted Ebardonian – controversial comment, but a great idea.

It finally happened - oh yes
It finally happened
I'm slightly mad
Just very slightly mad

Another wee TIE press release gratefully re-spun by Mr Picken! But surely this 'programme of urban public realm improvement' (cleaning up the shambles Holmes left behind him) was all part of the Grand TramCar Vision, (it certainly appears in the Cartoon Version) and will have been budgeted for in the Master Plan subsequently voted through by the loonies in the Holyrood Asylum?? Maybe if TIE's contractors were properly supervised, some of their disgraceful work wouldn't need put right at further, public expense.
But remember Trams were Leader Anderson and Dopey Burns' Grandiose Delusion - TIE were simply invented as the Kooncil's quasi-private sector vehicle to implement their policy - this all comes back to the Kooncil. Yet more drip-feeding to soften up the Taxpayer for a massive cost overrun!!

As time go by, it's becoming clearer and clearer that the construction of this tram LINE really is going to be the proverbial ball and chain round the ankles of Edinburgh for decades to come.

I just can't help but shake my head in disbelief when it appears that on almost on a daily basis, someone else on the council or TIE or whoever comes up with yet another mini project revolving around the trams that involves VAST sums of money and resources to carry out, and all this when there will almost certainly be a HUGE shortage of funds to actually get the tram LINE finished in the first place.

Not forgetting the fact that we are also seeing many local businesses facing financial ruin at the moment due to the trams, so to be constantly talking of spending £X million here and £X million there on silly little side projects is hugely disrespectful to almost all the local traders and ordinary citizens of this City.

7 Scallywag,
We, the citizens of Edinburgh, have been complaining for years about the state of the City streets and very little happened
Along comes a "tourist attraction" in the form of a tramway system and all of a sudden funds are being directed at selected areas.
You say " The grassed areas in a shabby state that other world class cities would never allow."
Wow ! You have certainly got your priorities right !!!!!!!!
What about tourists I meet who call Edinburgh "The Holey City" ?

We have been shortchanged road repair wise by succesive administrations for twenty years
There has been a metal cover over a pothole in Wardie Road which I pass every day .
It has been in place for over TWO YEARS and your complaing about "shabby grass " !!
This despite four phone calls , four emails and six letters to the appropriate department/councillor.
I am sure there are hundreds of other EN readers who can relate similar problems.

Saoghal Beag,

jdships, and in face of all that girning the defy you even further and blow the roads budget on trams, well no just the roads budget. Imagine you will soon have to load your wheelie bins into the back of your cars and take them to the tip yourself once the cut back on teh skaffies.

37 The Genuine Mario Antoinette,

Still up front with the rudeness I see - sadly nothing changes with you.
You say you "are quite happy thank you very much "
Happy with what ?
Certainly not the condition of the roads surely ?
That is what I was commenting on nothing more nothing less . Just a case of asking the Administration to get their priorities right.

45# Ho Ho Ho, The point is, it is Satirical. Pertaining to satire. Meaning it echo's real life and the tram LINE is simply, the real life waste of money that the satirical cartoon was poking fun at.

45 Scallywag,

See where you are coming from in your first paraand understand your reasoning .
My point is the fact that it is taking a tram system , like it or hate it, to build up some impetus in the road works department seems a bit strange.
Then again Edinburgh Council never has hidden the fact that they just don't like motorists !!!
37

Axl,

Edinburgh 06/05/2008 21:11:56
From what I can see, there shouldn't even be any of this ridiculous regeneration talk of areas around the stops for the proposed tram LINE.

If they are serious about getting this absurd project completed anywhere NEAR it's original budget then all funds and efforts should be focused directly on exactly that.

Better still, giving the whole thing the boot right now would surely be the most sensible option...

38

Saoghal Beag,

06/05/2008 21:26:51
This is serious what happens to that classic glasgow refrain

"yif only goat wan street"

when princes street is taken over by polish labourers digging whole all over the place?

It's 'even fewer locals' being able to afford local houses.

Totally agree with the obsession with profit.

And due to this tram project, all I would say The City of Edinburgh has to look forward to in the furure is an Everest-sized mountain of debt...

40

Bertie The Bat,

07/05/2008 06:08:14
Bah! trams, who needs them?
41

SamSung,

10/05/2008 01:31:38
the whole tram thing is still goin on cause all us council tax payers dared to vote agin the congestion charge.

this after the no vote on their idea to change the whole council house ownership thang..has got our overpaid, doin very little for us,where are my expenses?numpties.......less than impressed with the voters, their employers..............which they never remember.

SO to teach us a lesson, they introduce a policy...the trams............which will totally fuk up edinburgh city centre for years(except for during the festival)
basically out of spite.........to give us a one rout tram line, that is already served perfectly well by busses.
