Published Date: 01 June 2009
THE first set of tracks for Edinburgh's £545 million tram project is expected to be delivered to Princes Street within days.
After a series of setbacks elsewhere on the 11-mile route, it will be the first visible sign of progress which tram bosses hope will help win over the doubters.

The laying work is due to begin in the second week of June, making Princes Street the first to see tracks go down after false starts in Leith and Stenhouse.

News of the delivery was today welcomed by small business leaders, eager to see the work completed as quickly as possible.

And long-time tram opponent, deputy council leader Steve Cardownie, said tram bosses now had to make sure that the project was delivered as quickly and as close to budget as possible.

He said: "I'm sure supporters of the trams will be glad to finally see some evidence of the project above ground. That doesn't detract from the fact that it's an ill-conceived waste of public money.

"The arrival of the tracks will cheer those who thought they were going to be delivered by Santa Claus. It's now clear that more public money than first envisaged is to be spent on the project. We just have to try and ensure that companies don't try and plunder the public purse."

Michael Dixon, chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses in Edinburgh, said it was a welcome development. "It is nice to see something tangible after all the work that has been going on.

"The FSB was ready to welcome the track laying in January in Leith Walk, but is very glad it is now going ahead in Princes Street. We want to see this work completed as soon as possible."

Track laying had been expected to begin in January in Leith Walk and at Stenhouse, but has repeatedly been put back.

Earlier this year, former transport convener Phil Wheeler admitted that tracks are not likely to be laid in Leith until the autumn.

Tram bosses are understood to be concentrating their efforts on Princes Street as its closure remains the most high-profile example of the disruption caused by the project.

Earlier this month, the new chief executive of TIE said he expected public opinion to swing behind the project after the tracks – the first visible signs of the line – are laid.

Richard Jeffrey said he was also certain there would be clamour for tram extensions after the first line was opened.

It is expected that sections of Princes Street west of the Mound, which are currently closed to pedestrians, will be re-opened in the coming months as the track laying takes place.

And was it really, absolutely necessary for TIE to steal a lane from the Gogar roundabout for their depot works?

Having the rails delivered is nothing. They need to get them laid.

Precisely. They'll be saying that they can't bed the rails down properly because the heat has caused them to expand or some other such daft excuse.

They should just scrap this insane project.

This is just getting stupid! know one cares for the trams so running stories on them each day is pointless. Lets just wait till its done and dusted. by that time we will have hover busses and cars and no need for trams the year 2058 or somewhere close to that.

As far as I'm concerned, the 'arrival' of these tracks means absolutely nothing. It's not symbolic, it's not a 'milestone', it's nothing.

As for 'win over the doubters'? Yet another idiotic statement from those in charge of this fiasco.

The fact is they should be trying to understand that many, many MANY people are angered at witnessing, on a daily basis, the blatant squandering of hundreds of millions of pounds of valuable taxpayers money and a fine city being needlessly carved up in the process - and that they want this project halted with immediate effect.

It is still not too late to scrap the entire tram project and put this city back to how it was before the previous Labour council started to really mess things up.

Steve Cardownie takes the biscuit. Leaks appear from within the Council against tram staff, then they quit or get the sack for Councillors' mistakes, then he blames the last administration for delays.

Honestly, almost anything would have been better than a local administration composed 50% of incompetents against trams and 50% of incompetents in favour of trams.

The laying of track in Princes Street tends to suggest there is some truth that all is not well with the Leith Walk section as the underground services look as thouigh they are still receiving attention and considering that this was where the rearrangment of underground services first started.

#39 - I personally don't want the damned things because they will serve no useful purpose for any journey I will ever make. On the contrary, IF I am forced to set foot on one, it will be because the excellent bus service I currently enjoy will be cut short to artificially inflate passenger figures on this 'World-Class' White Elephant. This is the same as getting off the bus in Princes Street and switching to a 22 to complete a journey I can currently make on one bus. Why would anybody who's not insane want to do that? (Don't say to 'Tackle Congestion/Polution' - TIE's own figures give that as 1-2%)

* Trams were invented by Leonardo da Vinci
* Trams increase fertility just by sitting in them
* Hitler had a phobia of trams
* Trams are a vital stage in fixing Nitrogen
* The Chinese are developing a tram for export to Glasgow that runs on the static electrical charge developed by people wearing shellsuits
* The first ever tram was installed in Monaco. Everyone who lives in Monaco is now a multi millionaire or a formula 1 driver as a result
* Trams loaded with TNT were fired at Nazi front lines to halt the threat of a Nazi state free of Jews and trams.

I read an article in the EEN about a year ago stated that some of the rails had been delivered by boat from Norway or Austria or somewhere and have been sitting in a storage yard in Leith since then.

By saying that the 'tracks have arrived' is yet more complete spin from the fools in charge of this doomed project.

It's down to TIE's sheer incompetence that these tracks have actually been sitting for the best part of nine months in Leith...

David, I'm one of many people who are very concerned about the huge amounts of money this 'project' is costing (in my view ir is and always was a total waste). I am further concerned by the impact this 'project' is likely to have on our Council Tax - originally TIE et al swore blind that CT wouldn't be used/involved, now Councillors will not commit one way or the other.

Also, please correct me if I'm wrong, but the towns & cities you quote had tram systems long before UNESCO were conceived and/or sticking their noses into other peoples business.

"#114 Why would you need to raise the wires to run double deck trams? Double and single deck trams run all the time in Blackpool and Hong Kong."

Er, perhaps because the wires on these systems are set at a height sufficient to accommodate the double-deck trams, with the single deck vehicles having pantographs designed to reach the higher wires?

Here is a link to an interesting description of the superb Strasbourg tram system. Opening in 1994 as a single route it now has 5 lines and is the largest in France. Look at the pictures and you will see how it blends in with the urban environment. Incidently, the 'Eurotrams' which make up the main batch of the tram fleet were built in Derby!
