PRINCES Street would be closed to traffic for up to two months under plans being considered by tram chiefs.
The Evening News understands that taxis and buses would be diverted via George Street as part of the move, which would take place in 2009, to allow the laying of tram tracks.

CAN YOU DIG IT? The closure of Princes Street would create headaches

Sources close to the £498 million tram project have also said that Princes Street will also close for up to a week in February next year as part of work to divert utility pipes. Other busy streets on the

Newhaven to airport route, such as Shandwick Place, could also be facing temporary closures under the plans being considered by tram firm TIE.

TIE had previously stated that tram works would be carried out in stages, with a maximum of seven roadworks taking place at any one time, with each one no more than 200 metres long.

However, it is now considering a different strategy for Edinburgh's busiest shopping street that would allow it to carry out more work quicker. Business groups today warned that the full closure of Princes Street to traffic would create major headaches for shoppers and retailers.

Tram bosses insisted no decisions have been taken and they were still examining a number of options on how to temporarily divert traffic along the tram line.

Rob Winter, chairman of the Princes Street Association, said: "If there is this sort of plan then we would obviously need to consult with our members. Apart from getting people to the doors of the shops, there is also the consideration that a lot of retailers can only take their deliveries from the front on Princes Street."

Work moving pipes in the rest of Princes Street will resume in January and construction on the tram lines will get under way in February. Denzil Skinner, treasurer of the George Street Traders Association, said: "We want clarification on whether they are proposing partial or full closure of Princes Street to traffic. I think if all traffic was diverted on to George Street there would be gridlock."

The entire programme of trams roadworks will take more than three years to complete and involve digging up the roads twice – first to move water mains and gas pipes from the path of the trams, then to build the tram lines, stops and overhead wires.

Bill Campbell, Lothian Buses operations director, said: "Lothian Buses are working closely with TIE to make sure that the disruption is minimised.

"We have also invested in additional automatic vehicle locator equipment which allows us to monitor the disruption and react in real time."

Andrew Holmes, director of city development, said: "Our ultimate aims are to keep the city moving and not to discourage visitors. To achieve that we are obviously seeking to reduce the time spent on on-street works.

"As soon as we have proposals formulated it is our priority to ensure that businesses, residents and stakeholders know what is happening and why."

Willie Gallagher, chairman of TIE, said: "The next few years will see trams become a reality on Edinburgh's streets. TIE and the council have made a commitment to keep Edinburgh open for business during that time.

"We are therefore examining a number of options on how to temporarily divert traffic along the tram line. The options chosen will be agreed in early 2008 and then will be widely communicated."

Good idea, just wish it could be permanent. There's far too many buses and taxis on princes street right now. People are always comparing Princes Street to the likes of Buchanan Street and Sauchiehall street. Their biggest advantage over princes street is them being closed to traffic, it makes a massive difference.

The day when it was shut for the fireworks this year was my best day ever shopping on Princes Street.

have a look at the state of the roads in the New Town where traffi has been diverted off Princes St at present. the cobbled streets, never designed to take the weight or volume of traffic (HGV's etc) are becoming so potted that small cars are getting lost in them! if they shut Princes St for this harebrained scheme will they do a before and after monitoring exercise?

Why would you need to close Princes Street to traffic to make it better shopping? When i go shopping i tend to walk along the pavements or go in the shops and last time i was on Princess St the bus dont actually drive on pavements or in the shops.

Behave yerselves.

yip its all coming out in the wash. Dont say we didn't tell you so....Gridlock will be an understatment.

Presumably TIE would have to apply for a TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER to the Council to close Princes Street. and this would have to be ADVERTISED to the Public

And were do they expect all the BUSES to go?

They've just spent millions closing off roads and putting all the main City Centre bus routes onto Princes Street.

Never mind the money spend widening Princes Street to make it more Pedestrian Friendly.....Yet now they are going to reduce the width.

And there is more than One Bus operator that uses Princes Street....Closing Princes Street WILL ADD Hours to journies...Pity anyone who lives in Dunbar or Bathgate.

Bill Campbell, Lothian Buses operations director, said: "Lothian Buses are working closely with TIE to make sure that the disruption is minimised....well considering that they are part of TIE....no doubt they will be towing the party line.

No1 the biggest difference between Princes Street and Buchanan Street/Sauchiehall street is that GLASGOWs shop are not full of TAT and run down.

So the traders think that closing Princes Street to traffic would hit them hard. How? No-one drives to Princes Street to shop and deliveries are made via the lanes at the back. So how much trade are they bleating about losing?

Like many others I stopped shopping in the new town years ago when I could no longer get my car there or park nearby. That's why so many good shops bailed out. So I just don't care if Princes' Street or any of the others are closed. There's no point even trying to drive through the area anyway as it holds the record for the number of GPS units with stress-induced heart attacks! Won't use trams, won't use Princes' Street - DON'T CARE! Try printing news that's of interest...

#10. very true. Trams are the modern replacement for "eyesore gap sites" and "we need a new pedestrian crossing" stories that have filled countless column inches over the past 2 decades.

Seasons greetings to all.

#11. Agredd. Obviously Princes Street is too far to walk from Queen Street bus stops for shoppers!

a point of view,

Edinburgh 21/12/2007 14:57:06
Strange that contentios tram issues seem to be released to the press on the last working day before Christmas each year

2002 - the tram plan
2006 - the "final" business case
2007 - closure of the city centre for 2 months plus

Could there be a hope that people will miss the story and then weeks later it's too late to complain.

TIE would never seek to avoid accountability to the people of Edinburgh by announcing things when everyone is either at a party or christmas shopping would they???

#14 How cynical. The truth is simply that all these reports are traditionally tattooed on secretaries bums and Christmas is the only time they can legally be photocopied.

somebody will get killed on george street, it's bad enough just now with the stupid crossings at the roundabouts, but if you put every bus in the city along it'll end in tears

Calum Crubag,

Shock! Were we warned about the need to dig up roads for the trams?! Was there no inconvenience when the auld tram system was ripped up? Typical negative slant from the EN. Wait till we get a dusting of snow. 'SNOW CHAOS, MORE ON THE WAY'.

I think 498 million pounds is a complete waste of tax payers money!!! if you ask me the money should be spend fixing the roads in the city that are needing it and there is nothing wrong with the busses in Edinburgh!! 498 million pounds could also build homes for people who havent got a home.
I think i should run the country!!!

Hmm ...,

21/12/2007 17:14:09
... I thought that Princes Street was closed to traffic a couple of years ago so that it could be used as a bus park.

Now presumably buses getting through the centre of Edinburgh will have to use the "rat runs" thatthe City Council so disapproves of. It will impact on the ability of real traffic to move around the city centre, reducing footfall in central shops.
19

calum,

and the daft thing about this whole rag bag of a project is that when there is a parade, a show, Festival Fireworks, Festive torchlight processions, Street Parties etc. etc..... guess what? Will the tram LINE be 2 separate lines terminating at Shandwick Place and Leith Street respectively? Will it run at all? Have the Council and TIE (alias the Council) even thought of that? What a shambles.

wolfette,

I don't want to say "I told you so", but knew when they announced the trams were going ahead that this would happen.

Two months? HAH! And the rest. I'm betting on the best part of a year - if not more - just on Princes Street alone.

Nice one for the shops, just as the economy goes down the toilet they will be in line for compensation for loss of earnings to last years figures, could be a sizable sum for some.

#1 and 2. Isn't the point of the Glasgow streets you mention being pedestrianised, is because they have shops on both sides!

This £500m white elephant will be to detriment of buildings, business, tourism and social amenity as we will have gridlock until is ripped up again a few years after goes in.

26

Mr Fuzzy,

Princes Street isn't bad if you know the bus stop you are looking for, but if you are trying to take an unfamiliar route especially if you a tourist, it can be an awkward experience during the day let alone the night. First of all, the numbers indicating which buses halt at which stop, are stuck high up on the poles. These are not easy to read at night unless you are standing underneath them. And since the bus shelters may not always be lit, the timetables are impossible to read unless you have a torch.

There's no real consistency to which buses stop where along Princes Street. You have to go back and forth between the stops until you can find one with either a Princes Street map or that has the number you are looking for. Other cities have a terminus on their main street, where each sequential range of bus numbers have their own stop.

Given the number of buses that go along this street, it's like an airport without the departure lounges. Instead, everyone just standing alongside the runway waiting for their flight to arrive and running across trying to dodge the traffic when they wish to make a connecting flight.

#9 You moan about driving to Princes Street ? Try driving and trying to get parked in that H*llish nighmare called Livingston. This SO Called 'guilt free' shopping centre is gridlocked every weekend, despite the fact that there are thousands of parking spaces and motorways all over the place. Give me Edinburgh City Centre and day !

Weird and incompetent

In other cities such diversion for cut and cover railways etc is done at night with the road being replaced by steel decking in time for the morning's traffic. Is ther any reason why that can't be done in Edinburgh. Find out how others manage in Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong to name a few

#30 I thought you were a confirmed anti-car cyclist? So what would you know about driving in Livingston? Actually, it very good in Livingston and the surrounds as the fastest growing town in Scotland. Or are you just a cyclist when you are raving on these posts and you're really a confirmed car driver ........ turn the heater up, eh?
