A WEEK-long blitz on crime is set to begin as police prepare to step up their presence and boost neighbourhood morale.
In the first operation of its kind in Edinburgh – and what is believed to be the first in Scotland – officers will join with fire crews and community safety teams for a massive crackdown on criminal activity in Leith.

The operation, which has been in the pipeline for three months, will begin on Monday, targeting all types of criminal activity, as well as attempting to boost residents' attitudes towards the area.

Sergeant Andy Harborow, of Leith Neighbourhood Action Unit, said: "The work we will do during the week is not original in itself, but the intensity of it is. This is an incredibly large, logistical task."

Leith Week of Action will see an increased number of police officers in the area addressing all crimes, from housebreaking and theft, to antisocial issues including dumped cars, litter and dog fouling.

The area was chosen because of its levels of crime, but it is hoped that if successful, the operation will be stretched out across the whole of Leith.

What a joke! One week of 'intensive' activity, then ignore residents for the rest of the year. I phoned Leith police last week to advise them that my neighbours' burglar alarm had gone off. "Had I seen anything suspicious?" the civilian on the other end of the phone asked. "Well, if not, we can't send anybody out. You'll have to phone the council." Just remind me again -what exactly is it we pay taxes for?

yip. Apparently police calls are being answered from some kind of call centre by lay people who have only done a couple of weeks training!

We could do with a month long action in the whole city to clear it of the scum that is around.

Shame they can't use the fire engines as water cannon!

If they sort out all of these feral brats that roam about as well as the dog owners who think that every green space is a sh!t house for their animals, then it will be a job well done.

#4 perhaps we can see fines for people who leave used tampons , babies nappies and used condoms lying around.

Always the dog owners that get the tough approach. I have 2 dogs and have cleaned up after them for 13 years without fail.
