US PROPERTY tycoon Donald Trump is one of ten well-known faces in the running to be named Scot of the Year.
The businessman behind plans for a £1 billion golf project in Aberdeenshire makes it on to the list for his investment in the country.

But Mr Trump, who is half Scottish on his mother's side, faces competition from figures from the worlds of politics, sport and the arts.

The competition has been launched by the ScotsCare charity and the winner will be announced to mark Burns Day on 25 January.

The list of contenders for the title Scot of the Year 2008 was released yesterday by the charity, which helps needy Scots in London.

Last year's winner, Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, is in the running once again, as is Olympic hero Chris Hoy, and tennis star, Andy Murray.

The arts world is represented on the list by author AL Kennedy, Doctor Who star David Tennant and actress Kelly Macdonald. Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay also makes it into the top ten.

ScotsCare chief executive Willie Docherty said: "Its always interesting, if sometimes surprising, to see who the public choose."

I appreciate what the man is doing, though maybe a lot of Scots would not. Why not give him a better chance of gaining a title in Scotland. "Scottish Hairy Bunnet of the Year" comes to mind. Just have to make it official.

Has it occurred to anyone that Donald Trump is NOT SCOTTISH?! The man is American, not, NOT NOT NOT Scottish. How can one earn the top Scot award if one is NOT a Scot?

He is half Scottish on his mother's side, or somesuch.

Anyway... Top Scot award? Hot air. Just something somebody made up to promote a charity helping 'needy Scots in London', which strikes me as being a bit off in of itself. If somebody needs help, what does it matter if they are Scottish or not?

I see Gordon Brown won last year. Now there's a needy Scot in London... needs a boot up the bottom!

How could that war criminal and Quisling, Maggie Broon, possibly be being considered for the title of Scot of the Year by a charity for needy Scots in London?

Maggie Broon, with his incompetence and mismanagement of the economy will be creating even more needy Scots, among others, this coming year.

This is the man that, among other things, abolished the 10p tax rate; and was going to charge the poor usurious interest rates, till he was found out.

If Trump was a world class footballer whose mum was Scottish, you bet he would be Scottish -

He deserves the accolade, the man is investing in Scotland -

I think the title should go to Rufus T Firefly.

You cannot be serious - John McEnroe.

Sums it up pretty well.

Wake up. Trump is "investing" huge sums of money in Scotland to make even huger sums of money for Trump.

Please see this article in the Los Angeles Times December 20th..

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-trump20-2008dec20

Mr. Trump has been involved in numerous lawsuits with the city of Palos Verdes (a wealthy suburb of Los Angeles) since he purchased his golf course there. Now he is suing them for $100,000,000. This is 5 times the little citys annual budget..

The man is a menace, egomaniac and to even consider this idiot for Scot of the year is a joke. If you were smart, you wouldn't let him set foot in your country...

Yes an interesting article.

Here is the corrected link:

Trump's stewardship of Rancho Palos Verde has been commented on here before but his record of petty/vindictive disputes (which TBF, some seem to work both ways), ignoring planning ordnances/zoning, failing to keep-up agreed conditions with the city & state, seems to hold no lesson for many here.

Still, keep it up - Some people are listening. :-)

Is this really serious? Is there no end to the Scottish cringe? It reminds me of some satirical TV programme or other (Spitting Image, possibly) when Reagan was President of the USA and Thatcher was Prime Minister of Britain: as he was bidding her a fond farewell he muttered under his breath "what a pity it's only your country I'm screwing". For goodness sake, get off your knees.

This has got to be some sort of early "April Fool" joke. I couldn`t agree more with #12s`, "TM"s` comments.
Trump is a jumped up buffoon and con man with a perpetual bad hair day.. He is no more a Scot than George W. Bush and equally personifies all that is screwed up in my native land. (Obama is a ray of sunshine. Nominate HIM! At least he was born on an island...) I still remember the depression into which I was thrown when I learned Trumps` mother was born on Lewis. How could a "real" Scot have raised such a clown?
My mother was a Macgill. Her 7th great grandfather was born on Jura. I would be happy to consider the nomination; would make about as much sense as Trump.
