Beckham strikes 'timeshare' deal in bid to realise his World Cup dream

Published Date: 07 March 2009
DAVID Beckham has put himself firmly in the frame to play at his fourth World Cup finals after securing a unique 'timeshare' deal that will see him spend the bulk of the next 15 months with AC Milan.
Beckham's desire to stay at the Serie A club is such that he will fund the majority of the loan fee being paid to the Los Angeles Galaxy – thought to be £2million – out of his own pocket.

Under the agreement, Beckham will stay at Milan until the end of the season, return to the Galaxy from July to October and then rejoin the Serie A club for the rest of the campaign.

It means Beckham now has the opportunity to cement his position in Fabio Capello's England squad for the World Cup qualifiers and the finals in South Africa next year.

Capello was instrumental in Beckham going to Milan in the first place having made it clear he believed it was necessary for him to play at the highest level.

Beckham's former club manager Sir Alex Ferguson has no doubt he has done the right thing. The Manchester United manager said: "It is good for him, there is no question about that because it is the right type of football."

The deal follows weeks of negotiations between the two clubs during which Milan balked at the size of the transfer fee Galaxy were demanding – thought to be around £12million.

The only issue that has yet to be settled is Beckham's position at the end of next season – under the arrangement he will only be on loan at Milan until then.

The deal means Beckham will not have the sort of long break most players in Europe enjoy in the summer but he will have several shorter breaks instead.

He will have some time off before rejoining the Galaxy once the international transfer window opens on 15 July, and then another break before returning to Milan in November. He will also benefit from the winter break in Serie A and believes that will make him at least as fresh as any Premier League player when the World Cup comes around.

Sources have confirmed that all parties are in agreement but Milan general manager Adriano Galliani said it may be Monday before the deal is officially signed off. Galliani said: "The Galaxy and us are going back and forward with corrections to the documents but we should be there although it's not official yet. The crucial day for the signing could be tomorrow or Monday. But the important thing is that Beckham is here with us and that he is playing for Milan."

The 33-year-old has been a big hit in Milan since his arrival in Serie A in January, making nine league starts and scoring twice.

Beckham moved to the Galaxy in 2007, signing a five-year deal. He does have an escape clause in that contract which comes into effect in November, halfway through the term, but he would have to pay hefty compensation to exercise it.

The 'timeshare' agreement means he will miss at least 17 games of this year's Major League Soccer season, which has a total of 30 matches per club. His return to the US now looks set to be on 18 July at the New York Red Bulls.

Beckham has never made any secret of his desire to join Milan

and it was a stance he outlined over dinner with Ferguson a fortnight ago when the pair publicly met for the first time since the midfielder was sold by United to Real Madrid in 2003.

"I spoke to David when he came for dinner with us in Milan," said Ferguson. "He was hoping it was going to happen and he wanted it to happen. I've no doubt it's the best thing for him."

While Beckham has been granted his wish, fitness experts have warned that the gruelling two-club schedule he hopes will prolong his England career may

heighten the risk of sustaining an injury that would scupper his dreams of playing in the World Cup.

Physiologists accredited by the British Association of Sports and Exercise Sciences (BASES] said Beckham should be wary of the notion of overtraining, where a lack of uninterrupted, stress-free recovery can start a downward spiral of performance leaving athletes increasingly vulnerable to injury.

Dr Emma Ross, of the University of Brighton, said: "I think it is going to be a really big load for him to cope with physiologically and without the off-season period to regenerate and rejuvenate, he's going to eventually start to see some kind of detriment to his performance, through injury or fatigue.

"He'll definitely suffer some effects, and how bad they are and how they manifest will depend on how well he looks after himself. If he was an athlete that came to us, it is not a regime that we would recommend."

Dr Stewart Bruce-Low of Southampton Solent University said that with the effects of jet lag and ageing to worry about, Beckham will need to match his dogged determination to reach the World Cup with firm physical discipline. "He is potentially putting his body under a greater level of stress so he needs to ensure that his preparation is absolutely perfect," said Dr Bruce-Low.

"I can only hope that he has good people around him to support him at this time and give him the right advice. He needs monitoring very carefully to look for signs of overtraining."

Lot's of hype about what Beckman is doing. Honestly speaking, I couldn't care less.

Maybe he his a decent kicker of the ball, but his heart is not the game. Just self interest.

The game needs less of his type, and more grafters

Why is Ally McCoist threatening Celtic about how many league titles he won as a player? He is not a player any longer, so what does it matter to today's squad of journeymen and talentless has beens?

Sounds like the pressure is getting to Ally if he behaves like that when asked a simple question.

Time for Smith and McCoist to hit the read and get Rangers back on track. They are both obviously living on past glories. It's the present day the Rangers fans are concerned about.

The Saints Go Marching On...

That's the beauty of being an OF fan these days, isn't it?

The "bragging and slagging" rights change hands every few days.

Celtic are in pole position in the SPL, although that particular race has a fair bit to run yet. However, once again, WS remains the only manager with the chance of winning the coveted "Treble".

The CIS suddenly looks like a huge match for both teams, and RFC still have the small matter of a cup-tie tomorrow against Hamilton.

I shall now leave the posting to the Celtic faithful. Will it be...

"Strachan hasn't got a clue"

or

"We were robbed by a dodgy referee"

or

"The Scottish Cup is unimportant"

Cheers for the tip-off bemused.

Just as Celtic were coming back to form, we get this loada old codswallop. Surprisingly, I thought Crosas and Naka were our worst players today. Crosas passing was lamentably inaccurate, and Naka played like me trying to play like naka...

The first half was so scrappy, that I only took in the second half in snatches, cooking lunch in between...I actually didn't see the goal live...but when I wandered in with a dish towel cast over my shoulder and saw that they got their noses in front, I sat down for about ten minutes, and it was plain to see that unless we upped our game by a long shot, we were heading out of the cup.

So it was back and forth to the kitchen for the next half hour or so, and each time I returned to the kitchen, my hopes were further diminished.
Finally, I sat down for the last ten minutes , and found myself alone, singing 'what a loada rubbish'.

Very poor performance from too many Celts today and as on so many match days this season we were mediocre at best in so many positions.

The league is far from over and both a dire RFC and equally less than stunning CFC will drop further points to sub standard teams.

Watched the game today at home with young fella and so often during the game the football on display was gash. Can nobody coach players to a standard that allows for a team to retain posession for more than 3 passes?

I really do want to see some fresh faces for next season at CP with hopefully a bit of quality.
44

BEMUSED EXILE,

Your input is always welcome, if a trifle hyperbolic.

Celtic are paying the price for making the decision to spend just enough to stay marginally ahead of Rangers.

Bosco Bhoy,

BTW re Beckham, yes he has a few medals but we all know he is an overrated primma donna who put fame and wealth above collecting medals.

You only have to compare what he has achieved since he left Man Utd to the long list of trophies that Ryan Giggs has helped Utd to win.
46

Shape to Shoot,

Bosco, I had thought the league was over after Wednesday night. I was convinced that we were back to our best and couldn't see us losing form to anything like the same extent as was witnessed in January and February.

But there it was again...dreadful passing, miserly in the creation of chances, zero thrill factor, cannae score a goal.

Strachan needs to sweat them down in training all week...they should be right under the cosh monday to friday after that rubbish.

Bemused I think there was a genuine attempt to strengthen in January but none of the deals came over.

Very few clubs were doing business in January, Celtic being just about the only Scottish club active in the market.

We should have signed a left back and we could use another striker...and McManus hasn't had a good season...TBH, I think he might go in the summer. He's 'lost' the fans now, and that's not a good position for a club captain to be in. I'd need to see it again, but at first blush on the replay, McManus could have done better than give away a penalty.

The squad we have, if it plays to form, is good enough to take the title, and we will then be in a position to spend £6m-£8m without going into the red.
The problem is rangers and celtic can be seen as two boys in a sweetie shop. The rangers boy hasn't got tuppence, but the Celtic boy has two quid in his pocket, but the cheapest easter egg is £4.99.

What they both want is hopelessly out of reach for both of them....I could rub salt in to the analogy and mention that the rangers boy already owes the sweetie shop £30m...oops, I just did.

If you want a guy who'll be 40 before the end of next season to protect us in the SPL and hopefully the CL, then you're crazier than I thought.

Of course, you want Ally as our next manager, don't you, so maybe it all makes sense after all.

I agree that Papac would be better served as a centre-back, although he did play there under PLG and looked a little lightweight.

I wouldn't mind him at LB if he had a proper winger in front of him so that he had some presence down the flank, but for pundit to claim that he's good going forward is very strange, and in direct contradiction to what my own eyes have seen.

When Papac under PLG played in the centre of the back 4, he was partnered with that time bomb of a Swedish centre half signed by PLG.

Papac has done a decent job at left back but I would like to see him in the middle.

Read post 82 I agree with what BE says in trying Papac at his natural position of centre half.

I wonder how good the Gers defensive record would be if they had played with natural fullbacks over the last 12 months, instead of using 4 central defenders across the back four.

Incorrect.

I never claimed that "Boogy and Cuellar" didn't say nice things about Weir. I merely suggested that it was the type of compliments that team-mates often pay each other when faced with the media.

Stevie Wonder could see the deterioration in Weir this season. but at least he has the excuse of pushing 40.

I wonder what McManus' excuse is. Any ideas Idee?
67

BEMUSED EXILE,

07/03/2009 15:49:59
That's right pundit.

I don't believe that they're genuine any more than Burley is genuine in claiming that Bazza could play in "any midfield in the world".

Players and managers talk each other up, that's just reality.

Anyway, as I said last night, the fact that Weir might have useful knowledge and experience to pass on doesn't mean that he's deserving of first team football. If it worked like that, then WS and WGS would still be selecting themselves for first team duties.
68

BEMUSED EXILE,

Your copy and paste is no more relevant than it was last night.

The bottom line is that Weir is old and deteriorating, and he'll be even worse next season if given a new contract. I shudder at the idea of old Davie trying to subdue a Barcelona or Man Utd if we make next season's CL Group stages.

No pace, no first touch, poor link up play, cant jump, give too many cheap free kicks away etc etc etc.

IMHO he is one of the worst forwards i have seen wear the hoops jersey in a long time. If we do retain the title my fear is the Board will feel vindicated in their strategy of placing financial prudence over securing players to take us to next level.

Even funnier is the headline in this football section...

"Strachan backs MacPherson to learn from seven goal drubbing"

He probably just hoped that he wasn't quite as fast a learner :)

Yeah i expect us to win the title but not due to our wonderful sexy football but more to do with how kak the other lot are. This summer needs to see a real purge of the non performers at CP. Too many duds not justifying their wages.

You're entitled to disagree. It IS a close call, and I sincerely hope that you're right and I'm wrong.

Disagreeing is fine. Happens all the time on here.

pundit as much as I hope the Gers win the SPL we seem to be limited in some areas of the park.

Up front after Boyd and Miller we are very thin.

I know the tic strikers are having a below standard season but WGS still has players to select from, who may start to hit form.

Our wide men in midfield do not measure up to the selection that WGS has for the tic when all are fit.

Other than Mendes(when fit) what flair players have we got in this RFC side?

Like dv it think it will go down to the last matches of the season before a champion is crowned, but I would rather be sitting with a 3 point lead at this time than be second.

The Gers have since the 7 point lead was wiped out, have had chances to put the pressure on the tic in the league, by at worst staying on top by GA.

Each time they fail to do so. Unfortunately WS and his team selections do not give me a ton of confidence for the run in. I hope I am wrong.

ahhhhhhh the old i have a 'gut feeling'. Where as the other bears provide a footballing analysis of the situation you fall back on the "im a Ger so i have to believe we will prevail" logic.

Not good enough.

Why listen then?

Saw the match, I thought the tic were poor, dont know how they got 7 last week and were held scoreless today.

Must give the Saints credit they worked very hard and got their rewards.

Gers still on for the treble.

Falkirk and the Saints through, the Dons have a replay.

I hope we can beat the Accies tomorrow, but in the cup you never know.

I'll bet the fact that he's done 3 in a row and heading for 4 frustrates you a helluva lot more.

The disappointment of being out of the SC is beginning to lift....the fact that we're top of the league by three points certainly helps overcome the irritation of such an inept performance.

After that stunning goal by SM on Wednesday night, I can just about forgive the bhoys already...in fact, I have.

We shall not be moved !

I'm not too bothered about being out of the cup...it's more to do with the fact that we looked to be coming into a run of rich form and we went out and played a loada pants.

It is my conclusion that the bhoys went into this one too big-headed, thinking that they need only turn up to win...well done Saint Mirren for giving a royal boot up the erchie.

I'm sure the bhoys took note.

I have to say that I was stunned by rangers' defeat the other night.
I was fearful tyhat they would stick in a barrowload and raise the temperature on the goal difference stakes again.

To be quite honest, my greatest hope was that they wouldn't win by more than two goals. Even a draw would have had me on the fringe of astonishment...but the loss of all three points ...as butcher said, to think that before the game, you'd have had to be on the gin.

Butcher wasn't even that bothered about winning...when they got the penalty, his thoughts were that if Black misses, he hoped that he'd row z it to waste time.

If it was unexpected for you, you missed a great chance to turn a tenner into £180.
