DAVID Beckham might only have played the first half of AC Milan's 2-2 draw with Rangers on Wednesday night but he put in a good shift after the final whistle, providing various media outlets with the very latest update on his career while careful to avoid accusations of talking too much about himself.
He laid on the charm on this brief stop-off in Scotland and even had time to share a joke with Ally McCoist mid-game. Beckham later described the Rangers assistant manager as among the greatest strikers in the British game while contemplating the pro
spects of fledgling Rangers striker John Fleck, who he lined-up against earlier that evening.

With regards to his own career path, Beckham had clearly decided he had something to say, and this message was relayed in between puffs of icy breath in the bowels of Ibrox, as he moved between mobs of broadcasters and reporters, signing programmes on the way.

Beckham's commitments as a goodwill ambassador for Unicef saw him accept a £100,000 cheque on behalf of the children's rights charity from Barry Ferguson, patron for the Rangers Charity Foundation, minutes before Wednesday's friendly kicked-off. Milan, currently in negotiations to make his loan deal from LA Galaxy a permanent one, realise they are bringing more than just a footballer on board.

There was no obligation on Beckham to continue spreading goodwill after the game, but he happily engaged with the post-match media duties while lesser stars hurried on. He was even happy to reflect on the 17-year-old Fleck's performance earlier, and consider the comparisons already made with England team-mate Wayne Rooney.

"John is a good player and it is great for any young player to have the chance to play for such a big club as Rangers," he said. "And it's also great experience for him to play against some of the best players we have got at Milan. People say there have been comparisons between John and Wayne, but there aren't too many players like Wayne. He is a special player and any player who is compared with a world-class talent like Wayne has a real chance.

"Ally McCoist, for me, is one of the best goalscorers there has ever been in the British game," he continued. "For John to have a mentor like Ally can only be good for his career development at Rangers. I am sure he is just enjoying the experience of playing with the senior players at Ibrox.

"Without doubt, Rangers are one of the biggest football clubs in Europe. Anyone would enjoy playing for them at 17. Pedro Mendes is a great passer of the ball and Rangers have a number of players with skill, passion and good play.

"The mental aspect is something people talk a lot about when a young player comes into a big team. But as long as you are at a club which looks after you and you have good people around you, you'll be alright. Ally is such a down-to-earth person that he will make sure John gets the right upbringing.

"I was at Manchester United as a teenager under Sir Alex Ferguson, one of the best – if not the best – managers of all time. I was fortunate to have a great upbringing with him at United. It couldn't have been any better than it was. I'm sure John will get that kind of upbringing at Rangers and it will stand him in good stead."

Beckham, who turns 34 in May, still has his own career to consider and left no-one in any doubt that he now considered his American adventure to be over. The midfielder admits he had surprised even himself at the ease with which he has adapted to life in Milan, where he has played five competitive games and scored twice since joining on a two-month loan in December.

"I have made them (LA Galaxy] aware that my intention is to stay here," he said, aware this comment would be the one seized upon by the international elements of the media present at Ibrox.

He said that he respected LA Galaxy and Major League Soccer, and had no regrets about leaving Real Madrid for a comparative football backwater in July 2007. But his sojourn with Milan has re-awakened his desire to play in one of the traditional powerhouse leagues, although a return to Champions League football will have to wait. Owing to a disastrous domestic campaign last season, Milan are the stand-out name in the lesser-ranked Uefa Cup this year. But even so, the move to Milan can only enhance his chances of extending his England career, ahead of next year's World Cup finals in South Africa.

"It's definitely important for me to be involved in 2010, but my main objective just now is to stay at this club and enjoy playing here, and then wait and see," he said. "Being at Milan would obviously give me more of a chance."

England have a friendly against Spain next Wednesday, and if Beckham plays he will become England's most-capped outfield player ever, beating Bobby Moore's record of 107 caps. The all-time record of 125, held by goalkeeper Peter Shilton, is also within reach.

"I have not spoken to (Fabio] Capello," he said, when asked if he had received any notification that he would be named in the squad, scheduled to be announced tomorrow.

"He has had some of his staff at most of the games I have played at Milan, and he came to a game at the San Siro (against Genoa at the end of last month]. Hopefully I will be involved but there has been no indication at all.

"The manager is always the same – he leaves it until the last minute, and if you are playing well, then you are in."

You really have to admire Beckham, with all his wealth and the outside temptations of gorgeous women throwing themselves at him, he still wants to play football. For all his travelling and the endorsements he has to fulfill he is still in great shape physically and could easily play another few years at the top level.
He is anything but dumb.

What happened to nakamura's big money transfer back to Japan? The papers were full of it before Xmas, one journalist even informed us that it would turn round the local economy. Looks like the land of the rising sun will be staying in recession.

#4 and 5 : I was under the impression that Celtic fans were "obsessed" by Rangers. I had no idea it was the other way round.

As for the match, very good bit of business here by Rangers . They managed to sell tv rights to the match to 10 different countries, well done.

Tell me, when the Milan players "Crossed " themselves
did Ibrox go into it's "Tasmanian devil " routine, or is that reserved for Old firm matches?

Just curious you understand.

You seem to be a bit over obsessed with anybody who points out the violent and sectarian aspects of the Ibrox faithfull!

Is it guilt?

A perfect illustration of the everyday utterings of a typical Ibrox knuckledragger.

Thanks for that extremely illuminating insight into your rancid brain.

His alter ego at #35 continues the same bigoted mindset in a manner that conveys the need for special education facillities. Care in the community is obviously not doing its job.

Figgy,

Ifyecannae

I recall that thread particularly well. James thought no one was watching, as the post had been left unattended for a long spell.

He then started challenging a Rangers fan to a fight in a park in Linwood if memory serves me right. However, he never reckoned on the bloke turning up and taking pictures to prove it.

But the "6 feet five, two inches smaller than Davie Weir" comment was hysterical.

Of course James denied ever challenging anyone, until the screenshots starting appearing everywhere he wrote on the Scotsman. He then disappeared up his own a-nus for a long time.

Shamed.
36

Figgy,

06/02/2009 14:08:54
James and Phil from Donegal are utterly obsessed with Rangers. Rather strange illness that only affects 1 in 6 of the population apparently.

ObsessedwithRangersitis.

Jim is also keen on supporting terrorists in Ulster as well and hates the thought of Scottish children attending the same school. He's a right bakanced individual is wee Jim fae Greenock.

Wait on it....................................

He'll be running to his friends on the Scotsman to complain he's being victimised.

#6, you need to look no further than post # 8 to understand what obsession is. And Malloy is a coward to boot.

Oh, and the Milan players were not prostituting their faith by blessing themselves. Nor were they trying to intimidate anyone. Unlike the Polish bigot.

He supports terrorism.

I would say he's more than a wind up merchant. I would go as far as to say he's vermin.
49

Figgy,

Oh! James is more than a wind up merchant. He's a very sick little man is oor James. Utterly obsesessed with all things Rangers and very sick in the mind.

Challenging posters to fight, supporting terrorism and totally against children being taught as one. Tell me Jimmy!

Is yer mammy proud of her terrorist loving son?

Is she proud you got all that money from the council?

Does she know all your ex colleagues totally despise you?

Is she proud you're a chicken and bottle merchant.

65

Phil McGillivan,

Gortahork, Donegal 06/02/2009 16:41:39
Dave, I agree 100%. All I want is to discuss football in a bigot free zone. James/Chancer spoiled that for everyone on here for too long with his bigoted ways. Hopefully we have now seen the back of this sick and sad individual.

I believe Beckhams range of passing on Wednesday night was top drawer. By making his move to Milan permanent he is giving himself a great chance to play in the World Cup if he stays injury free.

The more I think about it the more I laugh.

I see Naka has gotten the weekend off to prep for the WC match next Wednesday, and Skippy who is playing in that same match was not given the same luxury, and is playing this weekend. It seems a bit of a double standard by WGS when it comes to his players.

Should be an easy win for the Gers in the cup tie as they go forward for a treble this season.
78

Figgy,

06/02/2009 17:21:17
Oh! Jamessss, where are you?

I've not stopped laughing since Dafty Moll oy got caught red handed (pardon the pun)

Brian

Not much chance of steering this thread towards sensible football chat, I'm afraid.

I've never seen one poster with quite such a bad case of multiple poster disorder as Figgy and his "friends". I can however, fully understand his need to create some support for himself in order to somehow legitimise his extreme and distasteful views. After all, no other real poster is ever likely to lend him encouragement, and nobody wants to be alone at the end of the day.

He certainly doesn't speak for me or the other 90+% of decent RFC posters. Indeed, he may well now feel the need to turn on me, but anything that distances me from his type has to be welcomed.

As for the story itself, yep, Beckham is a great ambassador for the sport of football who has never forgotten what is important. The longevity of his career is testament to his dedication and discipline, and although a big part of me would love to see and England collapse that prevented them from competing in the finals of the 2010 World Cup, I do think that it would be a fitting swansong to a distinguished career.

John Fleck is at the other end of his career, and if he can achieve half as much over the next fifteen years as Beckham has, then he will indeed be able to look back with justifiable pride on his life as a footballer. The irony, of course, is that if he does fulfil his potential, then the likelihood of him remaining at Ibrox must surely diminish exponentially.

However, a few years of developing from a promising young player at seventeen into a great one by his early twenties, followed by a £20 million transfer to a big Premiership club will do very nicely. We are a selling club after all. (or at least we would be if anybody wanted to buy any of our players) :)

I think WGS's double standards are due to the fact that Celtic were unable to sign any cover up front, despite their "financial superpower" status (afforded them by none other than NN/IF/etc), and Naka's ineffectual play this season. Plus it means he doesn't have to say he's dropped Naka thereby avoiding unhelpful questions.

Although i agree with the comments about Beckham being a lovely chap and all i dont think i can remember such a hugh profile player with with so little talent given his status within the sport.

He has done well given his so many obvious limitations and although not the sharpest tool in the shed he seems to have kept a certain level of modesty about himself.

It's definitely preferable that we don't lose ;-)

Not so sure it's vital looking at the number of points both sides have been throwing away this season. I honestly think that whatever the result this year is going to the wire because of the inconsistency of both. It will make it very difficult if we lose and Celtic find a run of games but neither side really looks capable of it at present.

The pedant in me is forced to point out that the OF match is actually on Sunday 15th February.

Coincidentally, there is another huge OF match on Sunday 15th March, the CIS Final.

I'm not sure that winning either match is vital, but it would certainly be helpful.

A draw at CP and a win at Hampden would keep me happy, but I reckon that they'll be two very tough matches. I'm sure that WGS would love a "treble" on his CV, no matter how much certain fans like to denigrate the CIS.

Wouldnt take a helluva a lot for one of the 'diddy' teams to mount a serious challenge as both CFC and RFC have a serious anount of average players now in the first 11.

The quality so far this season has been dire. Rangers appeared to be starting the season off reasonably well, especially in midfield where Thomson was combining well with Mendes, but since his injury and the return of Ferguson they haven't looked close to that strength. That's why I personally wouldn't have been disappointed if Newcastle had actually taken Ferguson, I really don't think he would have been hard to replace with what we have in the squad at present.

I think, due to the financials, we are going to have to rely more and more on developing our own talent, Celtic will probably have to do the same. To that end it is encouraging, from a Rangers point of view, to see Fleck come through and perform and to see the number of Rangers youngsters named in the Scotland U19 and U17 squads this week.
103

BEMUSED EXILE,

06/02/2009 18:57:08

I would argue that we're a slightly more entertaining side this season, largely due to the presence of Mendes, who introduces a little flair into our central midfield, although it's all relative. We're hardly Barcelona.

Fleck has made a good start, though, and Naismith also has a bit of guile. Aaron, too, looks like a youngster who could excite the masses if he was given a run, so I'm hopeful of RFC becoming gradually more expansive and entertaining!
104

Bosco Bhoy,

06/02/2009 19:00:29
Yep Bill your right about Bazza as his best days are clearly behind him and the bears who go on about him remind me of Celts who couldnt see the obvious with McStay and his downward spiral during his time at CFC.

More homegrown talent is IMHO not something to look forward to unless we start to produce quality as far too often these young fellas coming out of the reserves at CFC and RFC are so lacking in some of the basic ingredients needed to become a pro you wonder what the fecking coaches were doing over the years.
Too small, too slow, not enough technical skill, poor athlete etc etc etc.

We're definitely more entertaining and are showing more guile and flair this season, last seasons tactics were necessary for the situation we were in in terms of rebuilding. I think our biggest problems this season stem from a lack of leadership and an alarming loss of form from Ferguson, this is perhaps due to the success of Mendes and Ferguson now feeling that he cannot leave the back line exposed where last season he had an extra holding midfielder which allowed him to do that.

The lack of pace in the defence also leaves us exposed when the midfield push on. A disappointment to me is that Whittacker has not come back to form leaving us still with 4 central defenders across the back.

Going forward there are signs to give optimism, especially with the young players coming through, as you said but this team is far from a cohesive unit at present.

Hard to know what shape the team will take next season. Obviously Weir, Dailly and Hemdani are leaving, Adam and Gow are unwanted, and I suspect that WS won't be hard to deal with regarding selling McCulloch, Beasley, Velicka etc.

The big question for me is who will line up alongside Bougherra in central defence. Unless WS is pinning his hopes on Webster, then any limited funds that he has will surely have to be spent on someone for that area. We may have to settle for a Darren Barr or Rob Jones type of player, or possibly go back in for young Reynolds at Motherwell.

At least by the sounds of things he wasn't daft enough to turn up alone if he had photos taken. I'm not sure what that's supposed to prove though?

I once heard George Best on Sky Sports talk disparagingly about Becks, saying that he wasn't bad for someone who "couldn't tackle, couldn't dribble, and couldn't head the ball".

Personally, I've always admired Beckham. He's never looked out of his depth in any company, and he has the kind of presence on the field that's appreciated in countries like Spain and Italy.

His delivery and dead ball skills are second to none. Anyone with Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan on his CV must be doing something right.

If you took Boyd's goalscoring feats out of the equation, then you'd be right, because I honestly don't know what else he brings to the party.

But his goals at domestic level are absolutely vital to RFC's prospects of success, and certainly against the rest of the SPL (Celtic excluded), a team like Rangers should be able to compensate for the fact that one of their front men isn't working quite as hard as his nine outfield team mates, and accept that fact as a trade-off for the likelihood that he'll score a lot more goals than anybody who replaces him.

So, for me, he's worth a place in the team.

We'll both play the same fixtures (more or less in the amazing world of the SPL), so what RFC gain in the short term, Celtic will get to claw back in the longer term.

So, no thanks to giving Celtic a 5-point lead. I reckon this one will be a draw though. It's a result that both teams will be able to spin into a good result, and WGS and WS haven't had one yet!

I remember the furore re the non sectarian word deemed sectarian. Hysterics from both camps, ours being the mirth kind.

Course, Rab C might to be on in Derry, which is where If Ye Cannae/Figgy/davesmith1/Como Toes/Ph*l McG*ll*v*n/educator resides. I hope to build on this.

Here is the fake "Phil" commenting in the Derry Journal.
http://www.derryjournal.com/journal/39Famine-Song39-stickers-appear-in.4816375.jp

Course there is the possibility that one so sick would scour the internet for arcticles of this type to contribute his own demented spin, you know yersel, we're dealing with a half-wit.

James, Chancer, Ray, I have to hand it to you. To come back on here after your earlier debacle takes some brass neck. 'School boy error', dear, dear!

ps I dont like that thing you do, posting others alleged 'personal details' for your own gratification. So, as a seasoned Fravia user and an occasionally evil so and so, I'm going to find out yours.

Ribbonman (charming name for a Scot)

No matter how hard you attepmt to cover up your hatred and racism, England and Scotland are joined as one. We are in this together, we are the United Kingdom, along with Wales and Northern Ireland.

Watch out for my 75ft banner next week at the bheastdome, saying something very similar about passports.

Look at your passport, what does it say your nationality is? Must be awful living in a country, where you are despised by nearly all of the population. The only immigrants never accepted by the indiginous Scots and that's the Republican Irish.

Italians, Poles, Africans, Asians and Jews from eastern Europe, all integrated into Scotland. Made themselves Scots, by their deeds. Went to school with the locals, abhorred terrorism, supported the land they chose to live in.

And then we come to the most hated people in the land. Refusing to even enter schools with locals, demanding preferential treatment, supporting terrorism against Scottish soldiers, covering up henious criminal activity involving young men etc etc.

And you wonder why Scots want nothing to do with you lot? You wonder we all despise you? You wonder why every section of society views you with suspicion?

You will never be accepted in my country, as long as you wish to support the very people who aim to slaughter our fellow countrymen and women.

It's over!

Have you been snorting something you stupid little vermin? What a laugh yesterday, catching our old friend James, forgetting to change his log in and then having a conversation with himself.

I even showed my wife last night and she said to me "Is that thieving auld git fae Louth?"

My Mrs was doubled up laughing at daft wee Jim, the 6feet 5 midget from old grim0ldby.
169

Figgy,

07/02/2009 10:30:30
Check this out James. Even the people of London despise you.

What a pleb you are, hopefully I shall recieve your lawyers letter during the week (YAWN), empty threats numptybaws, maybe ask Bosco to stick a wee comment on his crummy site too eh??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
171

Figgy,

07/02/2009 11:43:36
Danger - Danger - Danger********* raw nerve been touched.

Who gets the feeling that Bosco (Phil) and his Republican terrorist loving friends are getting a tad anxious?

Checking old Scotsman threads, banning the word M0LLOY, threatening legal action, banning the town of old Grim0ldby from being mentioned.

Game's up bheasts, we know who you are.

As for the person in the Scotsman........unemployment beckons very soon my friend.
172

If Ye Cannae,

219

Very true sir..

Why has M0lloy been banned along with Grim0ldby and Phil McGobblin??

Strange things in the Scotsman comments section happen indeed. Factual points by Protestants/Rangers fans deleted but certain folk allowed to either arrange a 'meeting' in Linwood or their posts with DOB allowed to stand.

THE JIG IS UP and the clock is ticking....
173

Figgy,

07/02/2009 15:58:32
Poor wee Jim, still trying to recover from yesterday's humiliation.

My Mrs thinks you're the funniest wee man she's ever had the mis-fortune to come across.

6feet 5inches tall - 2 inches smaller than Davie Weir. Oh how she laughed!

Arranging punch ups online and then bottling it - oh how she laughed.

Forgetting to change your log and having a conversation with yourself in front of everyone - oh how we all laughed.

Denying you arranged a fight and then withered as the evidence was shown - oh how we all chuckled at your stupidity.

Banning your surname M0lloy - oh how we all laughed.

Banning the town of old grim0ldby - oh how the whole family laughed at you.

James M0lloy - the thinking woman's amusement and fun thing

oh how we laugh at show dullard.
174

Figgy,

07/02/2009 15:59:49
Now we see Phil McGillivan has also asked for bannings to take place.

Of course his children dare'nt read this or they will spend the day crying eh???

James has some bottle, only on the internet though but when it comes to the crunch I guess it all just fades away down the back of his trousers...

I've said before and I'll say again. Phil's kids should be removed from his custody. He continually puts these kids in dangerous situations.

Contacting social services about this umemployed nutter would be a good start.

Oops! I forgot, he's a freelance journalist and anti sectarian campaigner. Only good old Tom Devine let the cat out of the bag recently, didn't he Phil?

Did you know M011oy is also a feelance accountant?
