THE Danish government acted quickly yesterday to quell Muslim indignation over a new series of cartoons ridiculing the Prophet Muhammad.
It advised its citizens against travelling to the Middle East after a Danish television station aired amateur video footage showing members of the youth wing of the anti-immigrant Danish People's Party (DPP) taking part in a competition to draw image
s mocking the prophet at a summer camp in August.

Denmark's foreign ministry said a militant group in Gaza had made threats against Danes in the Palestinian areas, and it advised citizens not to travel to Gaza, the West Bank, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey. It also cautioned against travel to Israel.

Denmark's second-highest foreign ministry official met ambassadors from Muslim countries in Copenhagen yesterday to explain their position.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the prime minister, who was criticised in the Muslim world earlier this year for refusing to apologise for another batch of cartoons that lampooned the prophet, has condemned the behaviour of the DPP activists - the DPP is not a member of the ruling coalition but supports the government in parliament.

In Tehran, the Iranian government summoned Denmark's ambassador to complain about the cartoons broadcast.

Egypt's foreign ministry called the behaviour of DPP activists "childish", saying that it reflected ignorance of Islam, but it urged Muslims to exercise self-restraint.

The 57-nation Organisation of the Islamic Conference also condemned the cartoons, saying the values of tolerance were eroding in Europe.

Lebanon's top Shiite Muslim cleric, Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, did not blame the Danish government for the drawings, but called for unspecified legal action. "This nonchalance towards the continued insults against Islam could set the stage for negative responses due to inflamed emotions," he said.

A year ago, a Danish newspaper published cartoons of the prophet, including one showing him with a bomb in his turban. Muslim clerics denounced these as blasphemous, and they sparked protests in which more than 50 people died in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Malky,

The muslims don't do themselves any favours with their reactions.

These cartoons are being used to deliberately instigate this type of reaction from them to make them lool just the way they're coming across on western media.

They shouldn't overlook the probability of covert agency involvement from govenrments who have a vested interest in them behaving the way they do.

They should not react by burning danish flags, boycotting goods etc but through diplomatic means, lobby the danish government, laugh at the sentiment, pity those who do not understand their religion, scoff at the small minds that won't even try to understnad it.

But whatever you do, stop giving the western media bountiful amounts of highlight reels of muslims burning flags etc, because they use it very effectively against you.

The fast growing Muslim population in Europe is a powder keg. If they don't stop Muslim immigration they will be faced with huge anti-Western populations within their midst. Beware!

This kind of behavior has no match with any civilized person or community, promoting insults or hatred, both.

5

A,

Lahore, Pak 10/10/2006 04:24:34

Mr. Derek is right in his views. But the other both comments are reflecting belligerent and extremist thinking. A moderate and civilized person/community can't have these views.

6

Roshan,

Mumbai, India 10/10/2006 05:07:31

Ignorance in the west about Islam is very evident in the comments of Todd and Nita. I wish the west would not confuse Muslim zealots for ordinary muslims. A vast majority of people in this world just want to get on with their lives and that includes muslims too. It's just that no one cares about ordinary people-talking about zealots and terrorist and jihadis is far more glamourous than talking about moderate, ordinary people. We also now realize that the west is not really as open and broad-minded as they claim to be. For every Al-qaeda and Hezbollah, you also have the IRA, ETA and the LTTE. Please don't forget, hatred has no religion-Hitler, Mussolini, Pol Pot weren't muslims, were they?

7

Aga,

10/10/2006 05:17:43

Stopped buying Danish products years ago. I think we should just block them economically. Let them get poorer ;)

8

Malky,

10/10/2006 05:20:19

#6 - the problem Roshan is that the western media has been subverted entirely by "big business". Big Business pick and choose the govenrments and guess what? War is a profitable business for these people.

So, they use their media mechanics and try to capture the minds of the gullable mass populace by showing them pictures of extremists burning flags, trying to make Muslims "look" uncivilised.

But i could show you pictures of the "KKK" in Carolina burning crosses and black people and maybe Muslims think that's uncivilised.

The recent unfettered raft if immigration in the UK was allowed to happen by a government who wants and needs their indiginous populace to fear muslims, so that they can garner support for wars in the middle east.

The government needs to get people scared so that they actually "hear the message" as they sit on their obses arses watching the TV.

Their are evil, sinister people in the world who are hell-bent on bringing us a "war of civilisation", on the one hand we have extremist muslims, on the other we have George Bush, Tony Blair etc.

There are 1.3 billion muslims on the planet. There's only a handful of "Al-Queada".

9

Malky,

10/10/2006 05:22:09

#7 - The Danes are one of the most prosperous countries in the world and their citizens enjoy a standard of living far and away the superior of the whole of europe.

Also, Lurpak is the best butter ever. I don't believe you've boycotted Lurpak for a second.

10

Roger,

USA 10/10/2006 06:01:01

I don't claim to know the details of the Muslim religion. I also try not to get my news from television as I believe it is skewed and only half truths. When I read about the reaction by some Muslims to the Pope's speech a month or so ago, I wasn't surprised. When I read about the rioting over the 1st set of cartoons of the Prophet, I wasn't surprised. Why? The moderate, level headed Muslims do not seem to have a voice. The moderates seem happy to sit back and let the fewer in number radicals do the talking for the religion. I would feel quite a bit different if I saw at least an equal amount of level headed criticism rather than nun killing, church bombing and rioting. Honestly, why aren't the moderates creating more of a voice for themselfs and all of Islam?

11

Malky,

10/10/2006 06:33:07

Roger - how are you going to see these moderates, if our media won't show them to you?

There are 1.3 billion muslims. you saw 4 or 5 burning a flag. Do you think Fox News is interested in showing you anything other than that?

The moderates do have a voice, but our governments don't want you to hear it.

12

Insider,

10/10/2006 06:56:10

The mainstream muslim is watching silently the same way the ordinary german and austrian watched, as the violent mob took power in the 1930's.

Don't expect any condemnation of islamofascists from them, they'll only demonstrate in the street to side with them, NEVER to criticize them.

Derek - I try to get as little news as possible from television as I stated above. I read, as much as time allows, news from the web from all over the world to form my own opinion on what is happening.

My point is that the moderates do not voice an opinion. I look for differing opinions from the moderate side on the web, and have trouble finding them. I would like to know why the vast majority of peaceful Muslims sit idly by and let their religions image be formed by violent extremest people.

Every country that has no respect for others' beliefs and feelings has to be economically punished. Therefore, Denmark and EU goods has to be replaced with substitue goods where possible. Its only logical.

There's no need to descend to level of offensive communication (i.e. drawing offensive cartoons). You should be more civilised than everyone else, since you are Muslims! Boycott them economically.

And yes, if there are boycotts of Danish products, my friends, family and I will buy as many Danish goods as possible and will encourage everyone we know to do so. Do not capitulate to terrorists!

32

Nellie,

USA 11/10/2006 01:04:53

I think this whole cartoon fiasco is quite disrespectful. I understand the concept of freedom of speech, but I believe that common courtesy, respect, and tolerance should be advocated- not hatred for people of any religion. Sure, there will always be people who respond to insults with violence, but you cannot stereotype these people based on an emotional reaction to something intentionally done to instigate them.
I would imagine that, at this day and age, the vast majority of Muslims must feel targeted by the media. The television and movie industry just fuels the fire of prejudice by making movie after movie and show after show about "terrorist Muslims" plotting to hurt the innocent. These cartoons are just another form of prejudice toward Muslims.
I believe some sort of restraint should be enforced by the government when a public media outlet shows such disrespect toward any group of people. Allowing such offensive material to be distributed will only inch the Danes closer to Nazi-ism.

33

Robert Roy,

U.S. 11/10/2006 01:12:24

Why should Islam be respected?

After all, Islam allows no Muslim freedom of conscience. If a Muslim seeks to convert to, say, Christianity, he is killed.

No Muslim can ask me to respect Islam until he denounces the doctrine that ordains killing of Muslims who seek God in other ways.

As for "civilization", the Arabians under Mohammed in one of the great flukes of history happened to attack the two great empires of the day -- the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) and Persian -- just after the two had exhausted themselves in a horrendous 20-year war. The Arabians in this way managed to conquer all of one (the Persian) and half of the other.

The Muslims conquered the most civilized lands of Christendom -- Syria, Palestine, Egypt -- lands with 1,000 years of Greco-Roman civilization before the camel-herders came. The Muslim conquerors were "tolerant" of Christianity just like the American conquerors of Iraq and Afghanistan are tolerant of the Muslim religion there -- and with better reason, as the Muslims recognized that the conquered societies were unmistakeably more advanced than they in every way.

The great "intellectual achievements of the Arabs" when examined more closely were almost always made by Christians or Jews who happened to live under Muslim rule. It wasn't until the Crusade period that the non-Muslims came under great pressure to convert -- and (no coincidence) it was at this point that all intellectual progress ceased.

Today, Finland produces more non-oil export-value than does the entire Arab World. And what student of history, religion, and culture could be surprised by this?

If there was no threat of death hanging over every Muslim who wanted to change his religion, Islam would not last two generations.

34

RG,

I agree with #1 Derek and some what with #10 Roger.
All I can feel from #22 Rupert and #24 Alexexander's comment is hate. Hateful people are every where and it doesn't matter where they are, in Eurpe or Middle East, they are dangerous.

#32 Kelley! Are you trying to say that the people who are protesting against the cartoons or pope's comments are terrorists? They have the right to dislike the cartoons or Pope's comment. Please note that I am not saying that its right to burn things to protest. Everyone will have a reaction when someone uses his/her right of free speech to make it offensive to other people.

Remember when France wasn't agree with the US to go to war against Iraq, we boycotted and changed the french fries and french toast to the freedom fries and freedom toasts. It didn't last for too long though.

The West claims to be the Torch bearers of Freedom,Human Rights and Toleration. While these very same Western governments and politicians are supporting the despotic regimes in the Muslim world for their own personal benefit hence making life miserable of common law abiding citizens in this part of the world.
In a population of millions if a handful burn tyres does it prove anything !? I think not.
One Crazy guy goes and shoots innocent little Amish girls does this prove the entire Christian lot are Murderers !?? Why did the media bot BRAND him as a christian killer ?
The actions of one retarded individual or a handful do not represent an entire community.
I am very very proud to be a muslim and a follower of the teachings of Prophet Muhammad and to get angry, react negatively or go around harming people physically or verbally are against His teachings.
The Koran teaches us that just killing 1 person is equal to kiiling the entire humanity and hence We are forbidden to do so. Murder is a capital Sin in Islam and any one who kills any human regardless of religion, caste or creed is to be punished with a death penalty.
Prophet Muhammad was a man in history who changed the entire wild lot of Arabia and the world.

Prophet Muhammad taught us that we as humans need to live in harmony. Most muslims around the world have many non muslim friends, i personally have jews, hindus, parsi's,sikhs, buddhists and christian friends not just in Pakistan but around the world.Do you think if i see someone trying to harm them physically or emotionally i will turn a blind eye and let them be harmed ? The answer is NO , i will risk my own life and that of my family to protect them because this is what Islam has taught me to love and sacrifice for others.
If the people in the West want peace and security they need to make a consious effort to condemn the involvements of their governments into the affairs of other countries, particularly muslim ones. As in our part of the world people are constantly suppressed by Corrupt and Cruel rulers. Democracy is a complete failure here as the rogue elements of society are the most powerful, rich and influential and people out of fear and want of money buy/sell votes. Poverty and illetracy are widespread .
People who in the above columns have very angrily responded have maybe never experienced drinking one glass of water infested with bacteria and sewer liquid.Millions of people in this part of the world most of the time do not even get that to drink.

While their much Loved President Hamid Karzai(who if u r ignorant, is the Sweet heart of the West) Parade's around the globe in this stupid Band master green attire !

Maheen, the man who so disgracefully killed the young Amish girls in Pennsylvania did not act in the name of Christianity. Unfortunately he was mentally disturbed. Islamic terrorists blow things up, kill people and act in the name of Islam. That is the reason you do not hear the western media portraying the disturbed man from Pennsylvania as a "Christian Killer."

It is vanity on the part of many in the west to believe that western values can superimpose themselves onto Arabic culture through regime change. Arabs are entitled to live as they choose in their home land. Most Americans do not protest Arabs burning American flags by defacing a mosques. Nor do Catholics protest the burning of Pope Benedict in effigy by burning the Quran. By our own western principals, we must accept Arabs right to assemble and protest. What I find amusing is the pervading thoughts among Islam that westerners cannot protest some issues associated with Islamic thought by publishing a cartoon that mind you is significantly less violent than flag burning within our own homelands and culture. Personally, I find it offensive that media covered Islamic methods of protest appear to be tolerated by mainstream proponents of Islam.

The issue between Islam and the west derives from a failure to from either party to listen to the other and a mutually exclusive lack of respect for each others' culture. Islamic people have the right to be offended by cartoons that portray their beliefs inappropriately. However, Islamic people have no right to censure western free speech culture through intimidation or fear.

47

Maheen,

Karachi 11/10/2006 02:58:24

Drew i once again would like to make it clear that the actions of one individualor a group do not represent the entire muslim world.

48

Drew,

USA 11/10/2006 03:12:55

Exactly my point Maheen. No groups that wish to co-exist peacefully do enough to create a useful dialogue or work to create cultures of tolerance among either westerners or muslims.

Westerners learned from the cold war that Soviet Bloc people had many similar interests and values. I imagine that true proponents of peace from either Islam or the West share many values too. However, until mainstream groups from either side speak up only the thoughts and actions of those who oppose peaceful co-existence will be heard.

49

Maheen,

Karachi 11/10/2006 03:19:32

If we keep on blaming each other it will not solve any problem but create more .
The media also needs to stop pouring fuel to fire just to make a quick buck.
Any one who says He or She is behaving violently in the name of Islam is not representing anyone .
It is an individual or group who should be held to account and not the Religion of Islam or the entire lot of muslims .
If today i go and say i am the Queen of Timbactoo will that make me one ? So saying i am doing something in the name of Islam does not mean it has the backing of God.
You people are the previledged of the World how can you even believe whatever you see or hear, atleast give ur mental intelligence a break , study Islam without any prejudice and see what it actually says .
Personally burning tyres and flags does not help any cause or prove anything.
I personally believe the West should just leave us alone and the muslims need to concentrate on acquiring education.
Instead of wasting one's own life and that of the others by blowing bombs Muslim boys and girls should work hard to make this world a better place for themselves, their less fortunate brothers and sisters around the world.
Serve Humanity !!! That is what God wants and that is what Prophet Muhammad taught us.

What every non muslim also needs to know about Islam is that Muslims are strictly forbidden to utter one word against Jesus , Moses or any of the Prophets in The Bible and Torah. We at all times have to respect them and if anyone says a single rude or insulting word against them we have to condemn it.
Prophet Muhammad taught us that the most beloved to Allah are Mary the mother of Jesus and Lady Asiya the wife of Pharoah who raised Moses.
Infact The Koran devouts a entire chapter Merium-Mary by name.
The muslim women are taught to follow her example in piety.
Prophet Muhammad also told the followers that the only 2 humans to enter Heaven without any accountability are Mary the mother of Jesus and Asiya the foster mother of Moses .
Prophet Muhammad also taught us the fifth stage of Heaven is entirely made by Allah in the likeness of the inner and outer beauty of these Pious ladies .

53

Drew,

USA 11/10/2006 03:56:17

Maheen, Global commerce has made it impossible for the West and Muslims to ignore each other. Ignorance and isolation only create fear and distrust. Leaving each other alone isn't likely nor realistic.

Making yourself the Queen of Timbuktu has no effect on the state of the world. Claiming martyrdom by killing the innocent in the name of the prophet and for Allah in opposition to Western Policies does affect the state of the world. And, those who do these dastardly acts do in fact represent a faction of muslims who oppose any kind of co-existence. Until mainstream Muslims accept responsibility to oppose the radical voices so prevalent in the media, then the only voices heard by westerners are the radicalsd. I agree with your call to serve humanity. And, I agree it is a waste of young muslim lives to commit suicide.

I live close to Detroit. Detroit has the largest Arabic population in the United States. I have studied Islam without prejudice in an effort to better understand the religion and those who practice it. Islam has many of the same issues that have plagued Christianity and Judeaism. Many of the arguements supported by the likes of Ibn Sina and Ibn Rushd are similar to arguements that have occurred between Christian scholars for years. Muslims assume that the West has not attempted to study Islam. That is a falacy. In an effort to promote peace -- many are attempting to better understand Muslims and Islam. It is an education issue.

To have true education though, you have to allow different schools of though also known as free speech. While at times free speech offends, it also allows people to get the very education that you advocate.

Finally, in my previous postings I place blame on both the west and muslims. I just seems muslims only want to blame the west rather than looking inward to how they can contribute to achieving peace.

54

Drew,

USA 11/10/2006 04:11:24

Maheen, very respectful teachings. Very useful for westerners to know and part of the necessary continuing dialogue between the west and muslims.

Conversely, Americans find their flags to be sacred. It is a symbol of freedom and sacrifice of American families. To burn it and trample our flag is exceptionally insulting to most Americans. Yet, because of free speech, Americans are legally allowed to burn their flag in protest.

As you can see there are two very different schools of thought. So the cultural divide is enormous. To bridge that divide will require continued dialogue, education, toleration and understanding.

I appreciated the way mr. Derek's comment about cartoon blashphemy the prohet muhammed (peace upon him) by Dainsh DPP youth sector as he has entitled of his own oipinions. I pity to mr robert Roy on the same artcle and dated Oct 10, 2006 of his little knowledge and to under estimate the religion of Islam. Mr Robert Roy of U.S.A. should review and check the history and present population of world's greatest religions? Islam is still the largest and rapid increases of its' progressive population through out the world. Not as Mr. Robert Roy of U.S.A. predicted that Islam will be for two generations if not feared by it's members to be cut-headed for those who apostolic Islam?
In regards to Danes DPP youth sector, this youth sector are the incarnation of NAZI mind to Zeonism. If the Danes government tolerate this DPP youth sector predujices to Islam and or other religion, the the Danes government will be isolated herself muslim countries where in their trade relations will be endanger. Tolerating a small youth sector like DPP, leading their government declararing war against Islam? not totally nor it wil give Danes government good. No advantage to Danish government by tolerating youth sector of future war freaks like DPP for lack of respect to other religion to her small future band of war leaders as shown by DPP youth leaders in insulting great religion Islam..

hey junaid.....BE QUIET!! pleasee....surreee the cartoons where offensive...i'm a muslim too....but not everyone really cares, and protesting even more isnt going to help anyone, it just creates more chaos amongst all!

a message to those who are ignorant to the muslim world: NOT ALL MUSLIMS ARE TERRORISTS! get that throught your tiny head.

Maheen, you a very good point and showed a really good example, education is what some people need, and not learn from the media, DO YOUR RESEARCH AND STICK TO THE FACTS, then speak!

a message to all those extremists:STOP KILLING YOURSELVES AND INNOCENT PEOPLE AROUND YOU! it has nothing to do with holly war or jihad. As a muslim, I HOPE YOU BURN IN HELL! if you're a muslim extremist, i'm sorry, but it has to be said.

I'm sorry if i ofended some of you, but my feelings had to be expressed. I blame each side, the western and muslims.

These remarks are directed mostly to "Drew" and "Maheen", as they seem to be serious men and deeply interested in a mutual understanding.

First, Drew, I know that immediately after 9/11 many Americans did like you and ran out to buy Korans to try to understand the religion in whose name Al-Qaeda acts. I did something different. I pulled up the Freedom House ratings for the nations of the world, and I compared the oldest ratings (from 1972) with the newest (at the time, 2000). Here's what I discovered.

Freedom House rates countries on a scale of 1 to 7 with 1 being "most free" and 7 being "most unfree". Countries with ratings in the range of 3 to 5 are rated "Partly Free". I grouped the nations into cultural regions and here were the results. Note that I have separated non-Muslim areas from Muslim ones -- for instance, non-Muslim Asia from Muslim Asia and non-Muslim Sub-Saharan Africa from Muslim Sub-Saharan Africa.

Region..... Countries..... Free... Partly Free... Unfree

Non-Mus Asia...22.......9.......6.......7
Non-Mus Afr.....29.......6......13.....10
E. Europe.........20......11......8.......1
W. Eur-N.Am....23......23......0.......0
Latin Am..........19......10......9.......0
Caribbean........12.......9.......2.......1
Pacific Ocean....14......13......1.......0

Totals.............139......81.....39.....19

Now for the "Muslim World":

Region..... Countries..... Free... Partly Free... Unfree

Muslim Asia......14.......0.......6.......8
Arab Nations.....20.......0.......5......15
Muslim Africa....13.......0.......8.......5

Totals...............47.......0.....19......28

I realize that my groupings and other facets of this research are subject to quibbling, some valid, but none that will substantially change the results.

Drew, I want to also point out that of all the regions, all but two became,

If all the ranting moslems think that by boycotting Danish goods they are going to make the Danish government restrict freedom of speach, they are sadly mistaken. Denmark has plenty oil and gas of their own, are world leaders in wind technology, manufacture the finest quality consumer electronic goods and have top quality dairy and food products. It might harm them short term in certain products but since the last lot of rioting about the cartoons, Danish exports to the rest of Europe and the USA have increased. The Danes also have an excellent immigration policy that requires integration from immigrants. That might be why the have the smallest muslim communities in Europe. Support Denmark, I am
