A college spokesman said it was "abhorrent".

I wish I could see these cartoons so I can see what all the fuss is about!

Although it should be pointed out that the cartoons were also printed in an Egyptian newspaper first with no rioting.

Thanks to #3 and #4 for the links. Had a good look.

Okay, I'm still not sure WHICH were the offensive ones. Some are even funny, others are definitely out to annoy the fundies.

But, truth be told, there worse about Jesus & Co been going around for years. Plus representations of "The Prophet" have been made for centuries. When exactly did they decide it was heretical to depict Ole Mo??

Does Great Britain have any organizations such as FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) that take on free speech cases involving students? Go here for the kind of work they're involved in now in the U.S.: http://www.thefire.org/.

I remember when some artist displayed a crucifix in a container of urine here in the States--definitely an outcry from many people, especially as the artist was funded with public money. But oddly, there were no riots, no one was murdered (as happened to a nun during the muslim riots). Freedom of speech means EVERYONE gets to express their opinion, including those that disagree with your own opinions.
