Published Date: 26 June 2009
CONSERVATIVE MPs lined up to pay back nearly £125,000 to taxpayers in "mis-claimed" expenses yesterday, as party leader David Cameron tried to revive his parliamentarians' tarnished reputations.
Nearly half the Tory MPs at Westminster – 86 out of 195 – have now repaid allowances, bringing the total given back to almost £260,000. Mr Cameron said his party was making up for past mistakes and trying to restore faith in the politics.

"This is just one step that needs to be taken to restore both some trust and some faith in the political system," he said.

Tory sources said there were still a "handful" of outstanding expenses cases, but 186 had so far been resolved.

The biggest single sum repaid was £25,000 by shadow justice minister Eleanor Laing – with no details given of what the claim or claims had originally been for.

The MP for Epping Forest had not previously repaid any cash to Commons authorities, according to the list supplied by the Conservatives.

She had, however, been at the centre of a storm over capital gains tax when it was revealed she made a reported £1 million profit on the sale of a second home, which she had "flipped" to her main residence.

The MP purchased a flat in 1993, for a figure reported to be around £300,000. She brought a neighbouring flat in 2003 for £465,000 and converted them into one property. She sold her Westminster flats for around £1.8 million last year.

Mr Cameron unveiled the new list of MPs paying back money yesterday after a meeting with the party's scrutiny panel.

An additional 40 Tory MPs were named, on top of those who had already repaid similar amounts. Meanwhile, other Tory MPs confirmed they would no longer claim the second home allowance. This will save taxpayers more than £108,000, Tory sources said.

Mr Cameron praised his MPs, saying: "Conservative MPs have responded in a positive way and shown a real desire to take the lead on this damaging issue. It is an effort – both collectively as a party and individually as Conservative MPs – to address the public's anger about what has happened."

But Mr Cameron was accused of being disproportionately tough on Tory "grandees" while being lenient on MPs in his inner circle, who have also been embroiled in the expenses controversy, including shadow chancellor George Osborne and Tory whip Bill Wiggin.

Labour back-bencher John Mann said: "While backbenchers and veteran MPs bear the brunt of these repayments, it looks like those close to Cameron – close friends like Osborne and Wiggin or former aide Andrew MacKay – are being given a free pass."

The Tories said nine MPs, including former leader Iain Duncan Smith, who lives on the border of London, party grandee Michael Ancram, and former Cabinet ministers John Gummer and John Redwood, had voluntarily agreed to forgo all or part of any future second home allowance claims.

WHAT THEY'RE PAYING BACK

Some of the Tory repayments of expenses:

• Michael Ancram – gardening, repairs/maintenance, swimming pool – £1,133.25
• James Arbuthnot – gardening, household, swimming pool – £9,338.77

Or when Jerry Wufus from the Black Latrine is going to post something worth reading?

We are all pretty sure that the Conservatives are going to be the majority in the next government but so what? They are just the other side of the same coin. Just as Obama is not so different from Dubya, (is Guantanamo Bay closed yet?), Cameron will be as lightweight and controlled by the banksters as Broon is. He will continue the sell out of his electors to his masters in the EU. These major parties are now so corrupt and fail to represent the wishes of those who have the vote that they really deserve to be comprehensively ignored. Vote for anyone else, they really have to be better than these traitors.

Anything less than 7 figures is peanuts in real terms. Let's face it, with national debts of billions, 7+ figures = peanuts. So the Tory party's £260,000, and the saving of £108,000 are mere drops in the ocean.

MPs from all parties who have been effectively embezzling our money should face the same penalties any other citizen would.

260 grand, What a pittance, in the scheme of things. You are very luck that ex-PM's do not get the same benefits as the ex-PM's do in OZ. The longest we have been paying for so far is Gough Whitlam (who was sacked in 1975), He, like the rest of them, still qualifies for an office with a full complement of staff, a Commonwealth chauffeur-driven car, a Gold Travel Card and a fully indexed Commonwealth Pension. That is only him. We are also paying a fortune for Malcolm Fraser, Bob Hawke, Paul Keating and John Howard. That is only the tip of the iceberg, Retired State-Premiers are also very well looked after. They all partake in the feeding-frenzy at the trough known as the 'Public Purse and, the sad part about it for the man-in-the-street is, even after all this time (especially the afore-mentioned Gough Whitlam) The Barstewards think they deserve it.

Salmond is tainted. He aspires to be the first minister in an independent Scotland so he should be squeaky clean, but, he is not.
Just give the money back Salmond, it is not an admission of guilt but a common sense acceptance that the Westminster rules are flawed, otherwise you look like just another greedy Tory pig.

Anyway, when is Salmond going to refund the taxpayer for all the ridiculous meal allowance claims he made when he was not even in London?

The cloud of suspicion hanging over him will not dissipate until he does.

It is only The Vichy Quisling Unionistas on here that make any reference to the so called £400 food allowance of Alex Salmond.

The voting public when thinking of expenses fiddling immediately think of only Tory and Labour thieves.

Much as unionists may try ,the parties that are excluded form the minds of the voters are the SNP and The Liberals.

so bleat as much as you like on here ,try your best to make it an issue ,the voters do not think so ,only you desperate losers.

Tick ,tock the time is coming for Scotland to rejoin the other nations of the world.

electoral humiliation awaits the Labour Party , and if as expected the Tories try and kick even Calman into the long grass the Scottish electorate will get further proof that Independence is the only route for Scotland.

Labour / Tory who cares just both sides of the same coin!!!

No government , a country led by elders?
anbarchy, dictatorship?

However you slice it and dice it we need some form of government.
That therefore entails an organised structure.
Under the present climate I go for the democratic elected route.

In that set up I go for the SNP and self determination for my country.

If as you say they are ALL scum , (I disagree of course) better to have scum that is Scottish ,for Scotland and in Scotland.

You sit and tell us they are all rotten what is your alternative?

38 Scottish and Proud,

This “Rab” character appears to be rather confused in his views towards politicians.

I note he signs a number of his posts with a quote from the highly political former Minister of Industry in Cuba.

"Hasta la victoria siempre" was the signoff used by Ernesto "Ché" Guevara in the last letter he wrote to Fidel Castro.

It translates as "Forever, Until Victory" or in other words, "Keep fighting until victory". This was a reference to Cuba's continued resistance to America as well as Che Guevara's battle for liberation in Bolivia.

However, like the vast majority of MPs, Big Appetite Eck is a complete amateur compared to some of these avaricious Tory politicians who would have the gold out your teeth!

every mp who made money flipping their house to save CGT should return the money, simple as that, after all they did not pay it, it was the taxpayer. anyone who does not, from any party, should not be allowed to stand.
how many MP's would support this in a free vote? maybe 35 from 635, after all ripping off the taxpayer was in the rules as the fee office was old mates who had no problem being inserted in the rectum and one of the reasons thay all became MP's after all.

Well, you've got to hand it to the Tories haven't you. A cool million profit on a little pad in Westminster. That puts the Labour mob to shame (well apart from the de facto leader Mandy that is, and of course Tony who wouldn't get out of bed for much less than that these days).

They are all stinking rich anyway so why did they have to put in these puny claims ? That is just so grace-less.

Mind you they are all still amateurs compared to that Grand Dame Shirley Porter. These is nothing like a Dame indeed.

So Rab whilst none of the parties are squeaky clean and we shouldn't follow leaders - some of them are a tad more SCUMmier than others.

"Nearly half the Tory MPs at Westminster – 86 out of 195 – have now repaid allowances, bringing the total given back to almost £260,000. Mr Cameron said his party was making up for past mistakes and trying to restore faith in the politics"

Is that right Mr Dave Snooty? Well let me tell you this - faith in politicians would be very much enhanced if you got hold of the 86 fraudsters in your party and marched them off to the courts for sentencing (as would happen to any crook in the public domain). Furthermore - faith would also be restored if you told the remaining 109 MPs in your party that laws within this country are meant to apply equally to all and not seen to be favourable to the people who make them.

See below do you think these Torry MP's have got something to hide - especially the 10 who have directorships of hedge funds

I also ask the question why they are MP's - public service or perpetuating the gravy train

From The Sunday Times
June 21, 2009
Conservative MPs rush to quit second jobs
Tory frontbenchers are ditching lucrative outside work before a July 1 disclosure deadline

The Sunday Times has found that members of Cameron’s team earned at least £2.7m on top of their annual MPs’ salaries of £64,766 and expenses.

The total earnings of the Tory front bench are believed to be considerably higher: 40 members of Cameron’s top team have second jobs, including about 10 who have directorships of hedge funds, which they declined to discuss.

Ha Ha,
are the unionista parties expecting the people to forgive and forget with this move?

Never forget, if it was not for the Telegraph, we would be none the wiser. The "details" that were eventually released would have been buried under unionista ink markers, and they would have continued their raids on tax payers money until they dropped dead.

Oh how the whole unionista movement, Flocks, Media, and of course MPs, must detest the Telegraph. I hope their hero editor has 24 hr protection.

How will they hope to redeem themselves if the truth ever gets out about the Iraq invasion? what spin will they put on that.

Over to you editor of the "Sunday Times". Republish the "Downing Street Memo" so we can rid ourselves of these liars thieves and murderers once and for all.

Any unionistas out there who claim to have a functioning spine are invited to Google the Memo. Read it and weep . Weep at what you have been supporting in a wave of blind ignorance.

Apparently they have over 3000 investigators "closing in " as they put it on benefit fraudsters , and they WILL catch them apparently ,they will receive a criminal record and possibly a prison sentence.

And our thieving MPs ah that's different they are honourable Members of Westminster.
worst that happens to them is to lose the Party Whip and they have to pay back ,all out of their £100k severance package and huge pension.
