The Tories continue to maintain a strong lead over Labour despite some narrowing of the gap over the past month, according to an opinion poll today.
The latest Ipsos Mori poll also found that while satisfaction with the Government was at its lowest ebb since Labour came to power in 1997, economic optimism was at a 12-year high.

The poll put the Conservatives on 38% among voters who say they are certain to vote – down two points on last month and 17 points ahead of Labour which was up three on 21%, while the Liberal Democrats were up one on 19%.

It found that the number who believed the economy would improve over the next 12 months – 41% – outstripped the number who believed it would get worse – 30% – for the first time since the turn of the millennium.

However, the Government's satisfaction rating of –62 (78% dissatisfied with the Government's performance as against just 16% who were satisfied) was the lowest recorded under the current Labour administration.

- Ipsos Mori interviewed a representative sample of 1,004 adults aged 18 and over across Great Britain. Interviews were conducted by telephone between June 19 and 21.

What a curious story for a Scottish newspaper to carry without any reference to the fact that this poll presumably refers to the state of parties operating outwith Scotland.

More North Btitish attitudes, I suppose.

~1 Seannair. Its a GB poll because they are interested in the Westminster result, which is where the next election will be.

The Scotsmen doesn't mention that "others" have nearly caught the Lib Dems at 19%. The leading "other parties" are 1. UKIP,(9%) 2. SNP, (4%) 3. BNP (4%).

You have got it all wrong. When MORI conduct a Scottish poll it is on the front page of the quality English broadsheets!

Actually no. The Calman report hardly warranted a mention..only provincial press reports from London..cheap and easy!

I had worked out that it was a UK poll.

I discovered some time ago that what the "Scotsman" omits is often of more significance than what it reports.

How anyone can still consider voting Labour is beyond me !

"Labour voter" and "consider" do not rest easily together. Probably "Pavlovian reaction" would be more accurate.

Great! Tweedledum leads over Tweedledee! What an effin choice!

Scottish voters - A vote for either of these anti-Scotland parties is totally wasted !

The "other" party standings are quite interesting. Perhaps some mathematician on here can scale the SNP percentage to a Scotland only figure. It will mean that the poll would be for a small number of people, but it would still be interesting.

What this poll proves is that there is no amount of crocodile tears and re-launching from Gordon Brown that can save him and his New Labour party from annihilation at the voters hands next UK general election.

With Calman a let down and a failed mess independence is the only option left open to scotland to address our problems and build a strong vibrant economy.

Unionists seem unwilling and unable to explain given the growth of the eu why the uk union has not now been superceded and now obsolete.

The argument say over currency must surely be between a scottish currency where we would have total control over monetary policy which has been so bad for scotland while we are in the sterling monetary area or the euro which would allow us to be within the single market and avoid currency fluxuations with member contries and also have a monetary policy more suited than sterling going by the past 30yrs.

These polls can't be right???

What about the 'Brown bounce'???

Remember a vote for New Labour Sleaze is a wasted vote!!

4% in a UK-wide poll must equate to over 40% of the vote in Scotland - in fact if Sctland has 8.3% of the total UK population (I stand to be corrected if that figure is incorrect), that I think would imply 100/8.3 x 4% = 48.2%. That sounds good to me.

"Tories maintain poll lead over Labour" says the headlines.

Does that mean we will see more of "Calander Girl" Annabell Goldie?

I can hardly wait to clean oot my sick bucket.

14 Whilst apreciating that 48% figure is an estimate rom a very small poll in Scotland, and unlikley to be as high, it does still make for interesting reading I agree. Im just waiting on the Labour newspapers and bog rolls publishing LABOUR have 17 point lead over SNP and Ian Gray saying this is tremendous result, and shows what a good job the LIAR party are doing!Perhaps they will create a new constituency somewhere in England called Pigging in the Trough so Labour can hold onto a seat ?

Perhaps the Hoots might run this 17 point lead story also?
They almost have anyway!

I was amused when I read that the number who believed the economy would improve over the next 12 months – 41% – outstripped the number who believed it would get worse – 30% – for the first time since the turn of the millennium.

Its a bit like being at the North Pole and when asked which way we should go now, most people said South !

Ah Morris,

The only place on earth you can walk in any direction for a mile, take a left for further mile then take a right for the last mile and be in the same place.

Handy for the wanderers.
