A NEW water play area for children is being considered as part of a £37 million refurbishment of the Royal Commonwealth Pool.
The ruling Lib Dem/SNP administration set aside £21m for the revamp in its February budget to meet a funding shortfall, and the pool is now expected to close next year for the upgrade.

The work will enable the venue to host diving events during the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Edinburgh Leisure, which runs the facility, has revealed it is also considering a "new product offering" in the sauna area.

The area is earmarked for demolition, and options being explored include a spa, hydrotherapy pool and the play area.

A city council spokesman said: "Children's play equipment will be part of plans for the refurbishment of the pool."
