CHERIE Blair said yesterday she feared for her children when they went out in the street and warned that knife and gun crime among teenagers could be more common than official figures suggested.
The QC, the wife of former prime minister Tony Blair, claimed that evidence showed crime statistics did not reflect the true extent to which under-16s were carrying weapons.

Her comments, before the Commons home affairs select committee, are based on her participation in a recent investigation into young people using knives and guns, and follow a string of high-profile teenage deaths at the hands of fellow youngsters.

Appearing as Ms Booth before the committee, she told MPs that the death of teenager Ben Kinsella – brother of former EastEnders actress Brooke Kinsella – in London on Sunday further highlighted the problem of knife violence.

Later family and friends of the 16-year-old marched past the spot where he was killed to demand an end to knife crime.

Many among the hundreds of demonstrators sported white T-shirts with slogans such as "RIP Ben", "You're an Angel", "Stop Knife Violence" and "You're Always in Our Hearts."

Yesterday four more youths in their late teens were arrested and questioned over the murder. Two teenagers have already been bailed pending enquiries.

Mrs Blair stopped short of backing calls by ministers for tougher court action against offenders, insisting that police should retain the right to issue cautions for those caught with blades.

The mother of four, in her capacity as chairwoman of the Street Weapons Commission, said: "As a parent I am concerned about knife crime and what happens when my children go on the streets. I am not alone in that."

Mrs Blair added that there was "no magic-wand solution" to knife crime – which appeared to be increasing and could be even more common than statistics suggest.

She added: "I think the evidence that we heard from people on the street and indeed the figures we were getting from hospitals, is that there are more people presenting with injuries caused in this way.

"Because this is almost a new phenomenon – that younger children are carrying knives and, sadly, using them – the statistics are not looking at the right areas."

She said that answers to the problem must include better provision of role models, improved community work and a more active approach by police, including more high-visibility policing targeting places where officers know youths often carry weapons.

On policing, Mrs Blair told MPs: "I think the idea of taking the glamour out of the crime, and making highly visible policing in the way we have seen in Hackney and harrying the criminals is a good approach.

"We have got to get this message across that carrying a knife is no protection at all.

"If young people think they can carry knives and no-one's ever going to pick them up carrying a knife then they are more likely to take one out," she told the committee.

"Whereas if they think when they carry a knife that's it's going to be detected, that may well make a really big difference."

FFS! Will this woman not just go away? The only knife crime she has experienced is the Sunday roast at 10 Downing.

Too bad she was a failure in convincing her hubbie to stay out of Iraq - that - that - would have saved many lives.

The Bliars! The UK Clintons.

Clearly for ten years her husband, whilst Prime Minister did not share her views and allowed law and order to spiral out of control throughout the UK. Labour are a waste of space. It's time to take the law into your own hands. Don't expect the police to protect you unless you are black, muslim or an illegal immigrant.

Anarchy is coming faster than some people might think.

She certainly knows about stabbing people in the back - Gordon Brown will attest to that.

Congratulations Cherie - it was your neo-marxist husband and friends who allowed unlimited immigration from Jamaica, Somalia, Afghanistant, Pakistan and all points East. Almost all the perpetrators of knife-murders on our streets in London are black teenagers. The latest murder of the Kinsella lad is just the latest example. In many inner city areas - from London's Brixton to Leiecester, Birmingham and Bristol - we now have huge enclaves of foreign cultures whose values are utterly alien. Knife-carrying among immigrants is the norm -rather than the exception. Cherie Blair not only headed the PCV brigade that created this nightmare - but she reaped vast profits as a 'human rights lawyer' defending immigrants against deportation when all their 'rights' to be here had been proved false. The responsibility for 17 teenage deaths on the streets of London this year is entirely with the PC brigade who are allowing uncontrolled mass-immigration of alien cultures.

Ms Blair's feminist PC chums have also played a crucial role in the destruction of the traditional family, marriage and of all social 'norms' in the UK. See today's Telegraph - article by Barbara Wilding:

"Barbara Wilding, the Chief Constable of South Wales, says family ties have been abandoned in place of "tribal loyalty" among young gang members, who have become "almost feral".

Ms Wilding, the longest-serving female chief constable, said that social breakdown means violence and drugs has become a way of life in deprived parts of many larger English cities.

Custody could only provide a short-term solution, she said, with policies based primarily on enforcement "set on sand".

She said: "In many of our larger cities, in areas of extreme deprivation, there are almost feral groups of very angry young people.

"Many have experienced family breakdown, and in place of parental and family role models, the gang culture is now established. Tribal loyalty has replaced family loyalty and gang culture based on violence and drugs is a way of life."

Disaffected young people were also a prime target for terrorist recruiters, she said.

Her comments came in a speech delivered at the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies at King's College London, in May, but made public last night.

Very tempting to comment on this story but no need. Everything that needs to be said already has been said, and I agree with every single word.

She is a joke anyway...... this the woman who cried for her son going to Uni while young kids otherwise known as our army were getting killed ..or should it be murdered....in Iraq.
She was obviously talking from her sphincter muscle there...or was Tony silent at the time ?

"She said that answers to the problem must include better provision of role models"

Does that include her war criminal husband, and his role in the murder and torture of so many Iraqis?

Cherie Blair is an attention-grabbing idiot.

As another commentator has stated, will this useless woman NEVER go away?

I am tired of reading about her and will certainly NOT read her ghost-written book. She is almost as bad a writer as Earl Spencer and that is pretty bad.

Sleeping next to a mass murderer every night, you'd expect her to be pretty cool over a bunch of kids and their blades!

Knife crime is a serious issue, but having Cherie Blair as some sort of spokesman on the subject is, at best, a joke!!

Great comment - agree with you.

She has made a bomb out of defending some of these people and their human rights and will continue to do so, no doubt.

No doubt she receives no payment, expenses, allowance for being chairwoman of the Street Weapons Commission.

And how did she get that job anyway?

As a child myself growing up in care it was nothing like what it is today .
l am 37 years old now married with 3 children.
Kelly 18
John 15
Katie 10
l know where my children are at all times this is what a parent should do.
My son John l worry about the most l worried he is going to be some bodies victim.
My son is popular in school with the girls and he is a gentle man with them too.
l have brought my children up the right way with love and understanding and l have been very frank with them that life is never easy but there is always an answer.
Now my idea to trying to put a stop to all the gun and knife grime is to go back a few years when the government brought in the law about attendance.
Now they say it is down to the parent to make sure there child goes to school. if not you could end up in court with a fine or prison.....
Make this the law with knifes and guns......You take the change and carry a weapon then you have sentenced your parents. Parents should be the ones that are taken to court and there children should end up in care. This is very harsh but parents should know what there children are doing at all times . Let the people think about what could happen to there mum, dad, sister, brother. All because they think that holding a knife or gun in there hands and play god to somebody live and making people feel scared and intimidated. They need to know it has to stop and stop for good. This country is know all over the world to be a place to visit not any more l myself don’t like to go far from home and l would never take any other transport other than my car as it is not safe.

Tweedmouth, Excellent point we have millions if illegal aliens here also. they probably carry knives also. The difference here is that we have the right to have firearms. If one pulls a knife here he will realize the truth in the phrase " never bring a knife to a gun fight.
I trained with the Royal Green Jackets in Thetford. I really like your country, but, I wouldn't live in a country that's oppressive. Sorry your country has taken away your rights.
