AN airline captain says he was racially harassed for being Scottish while working for British Airways.
Douglas Maughan, of Fettes Row, has told a tribunal that he received hate mail from another pilot and was called a 'Jock'. He said the airline has a 'canteen culture of racism,' with derogatory comments about black, Asian and gay people commonplace.
BA denies the allegations and the tribunal continues.
Delta drops Big Apple routeEDINBURGH airport is to lose one of its two air links to New York from September.
Delta Air Lines announced it will suspend its daily flights to JFK as part of a programme of cutbacks.
The service was launched in May last year after Delta scrapped its Edinburgh-Atlanta flights.
Meanwhile, Continental Airlines was celebrating the fifth anniversary of its flights from Edinburgh to Newark airport, close to New York.
Writer backs book festivalAUTHOR Alexander McCall Smith has donated a "significant" sum of money to the Edinburgh International Book Festival.
The Merchiston-based writer has confirmed that he made a donation as part of its new benefactor scheme, but would only say it was worth "less than a million pounds."
He said: "I am happy to give, I am pretty keen on the festival."
This year's programme was announced yesterday, and includes appearances by Margaret Atwood, Garrison Keillor and Cherie Blair.
Charity piper off to tough startA PIPER from Edinburgh who is busking across the US to raise money for charity was moved on by police and had a bucket of water thrown at him - all in his first two days.
Rob Calder, 32, was asked to leave Times Square by police on his first day because he had no entertainment licence, and the following day a bucket of water was thrown at him from a second-floor window by an irate resident. He is crossing the States to raise money for disability support group Ecas.
Underage sex trucker jailedA TRUCKER from Whitburn, West Lothian, has been jailed for five years for child abduction and sexual activity with a child.
Robert Williamson, 49, was jailed at Grimsby Crown Court after pleading guilty to the charges. He was already on bail for a similar incident at the time of the abduction. The court heard he had met the 15 year old from Lincolnshire online, then arranged to meet her and took her away to France.
