DEFEATED UK No1 Andy Murray went go-karting as the Wimbledon final kicked off yesterday – while he denounced "lies" in media reports that he smashed his rackets in defeat.
"On way to go karting!! One of friends asked if I broke all my rackets, said he read it, more lies!!" Murray wrote on his Twitter site yesterday afternoon, on the eve of Roger Federer's victory in a marathon final.

Murray said Federer "obviously"
was the favourite against Andy Roddick, who knocked him out of the Wimbledon semi-final.

There was no sign of the Scottish world No3 on Centre Court yesterday. Go-karting has become one of Murray's favourite pastimes for relaxing between games, at tracks like nearby Surbiton, sometimes with girlfriend Kim Sears.

It was the Australian former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash who suggested Murray had broken his rackets.

"The information coming out of the Wimbledon locker room isn't often erroneous, and I'm reliably informed Andy Murray sought a little solitude after losing his semi-final and took out his frustration on the tools of his trade," Cash wrote in a Sunday newspaper.

"When he walked in after that match, he had a bagful of fully functional rackets. A couple of minutes later, they were mangled, broken and consigned to the rubbish."

But Cash said it could only be "weeks rather than months" before Murray won a major title. "He isn't the first man to smash his rackets in annoyance and won't be the last. Many of those vandals from the past have been grand slam champions."

Murray has often denounced media "lies" about his behaviour. He insisted in an interview carried on his website after his semi-final defeat that he was moving on and looking to the US Open in eight weeks time.

"I'll move on very, very quickly and go and work on my game and improve and come back stronger. That's a pathetic attitude to have, if you lose one match and you go away and, you know, let it ruin your year.

"I've had a very good year so far. I'm very close to the top of the game. The US Open I've always said is my best surface, my best chance to win a slam, and I'll give it my best shot there."

Larry Stefanki, the coach who helped mastermind Roddick's defeat of the Scot, said yesterday Murray must ditch his defensive approach. "His record is great and he is a very strong-minded kid, but he needs to recognise when to play offence," said Mr Stefanki, who has coached John McEnroe and Tim Henman.

In a weekend interview, meanwhile, Murray's father Will publicly demanded more credit for bringing up the young prodigy.

The young Andy and brother Jamie lived with him in Dunblane while mother Judy pursued her career as Scotland's national tennis coach, he said.

He said: "I am not the kind who runs in and demands publicity. But the tale has come out like she (Judy] was the one always there. I worked full-time but I cooked when they came home from school. I did the washing and ironing."

doing something completely different for a few days seems like a good idea

Sefanki says Andy must be more offensive, yet he was held up for a swearie he never made during his match with Roddick.
Seems to be good advice though, after Roddick's employing these tactics showed in his performances this year...
AM's first serve against Roddick in the 3rd and 4th sets seemed to be way down, but this wasnt mentioned,
so maybe it was just how it appeared to me..

All the best to AM in the next one - he's improving in every tourney. Makes me itch to pick up a racquet myself - I hope other youngsers follow suit.

Obviously has a problem with socialising. When will he mature and stop being a sulky brat?

Jeez #3 he can't seem to do anything right. If I were 22 and had a lovely young lady as my girlfriend I know where I would be and it wouldn't be with the blazers at SW19.

Andy Roddick gave it his all and it showed how the Murray / Roddick match could have gone either way on just a couple of points.

Roger Federer is now the most successful player of all time but perhaps not the greatest. Having seen Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg play I would rate these two wonderful players better than Federer. I don't think that either Laver or Borg would have thought to have 15 embroidered on their clothes - a bit pretentious don't you think.

What a deeply unpleasant,self-obsessed,spoiled, pechulant brat Murray has turned out to be.

Always thought that "real" sportsmen are a rarity, and Murray epitomises all thats bad in so-called "sports".

So, no surprise then in that I am delighted he got gubbed by the more down to earth, decent, Andy Roddick.

#5 what an illiterate loser-worshipper you are.

I have seen no evidence of Murray's behaviour which would substantiate your claims. In interviews he has come across as fairly down to earth and possibly a bit naive, and certainly inexperienced in front of the microphone.

And I don't think he got 'gubbed' by Roddick, the match was pretty close by all educated accounts. I am sure Andy Murray was not required to attend the final on Sunday. I don't see stories of any of the other players attending or not attending. Do footballers all go to cup finals they have not qualified to play in? I agree with Venacher(#4) I know I would want to spend quality time with my girlfriend.

I have a broken squash racket in my wardrobe beside my good one. I hit the wall of a squash court after not winning a game I feel I could have won. It is called frustration. When you train for an event or match and don't win, sometimes you get frustrated. Have you ever played sport or are you just an armchair/t.v. expert?

I'd have smashed my rackets over Federers smarmy head and saved one for Pat Cash too - the clipe! I can't stand that bloke...no personality, no charisma! I was disappointed for Murray, but even more so for Roddick! He deserved more after taking the final right to the wire like that!

Andy Murray seems a dour sort of fellow even after a victory. Can he not smile, or does he have rotten teeth that he doesn't wish to show the world? Surely with the money he has made, he could purchase himself a nice smile.

He obviously has talent, he now needs to work on his his image and do something to make himself more likeable.

#10 He could win Wimbledon and then he'd make himself very popular!

What's the point in wasting time and energy on his image? He needs to focus on his game and the rest will follow! Federer is the most boring smarmy sportsman I've ever seen - he needs to work on get rid of the smarmy smile of his before someone puts their fist in it!

Can we get things into proportion here. Murray is not only Scotland's best tennis player ever he is close to being the UK's best player ever.

So he doesn't have the smiling, happy go lucky personality of Ronaldo and so he vents his frustration on his rackets occassionally.

He will be the first Scot ever to win a Grand Slam, the first ever to win Wimbledon, the first ever to be World No 2 when Federer finally peaks and quite probably the first ever World No 1 when he gets to grips with racy Rafael Nadal.

So let's back off with the criticisms, I wouldn't mind but most of his critics wouldn't know where their local tennis court was never mind be able to play on it.

First Cash says Murray sounds boring when he talks.

Then he 'reveals' from a trusted source that Murray smashed his rackets - this is rejected on AM's Twitter as nothing more than an outright lie.

Those two have a bit of a tiff?
