THE number of arrests for breach of the peace has soared in the city centre, with revellers caught doing everything from "frolicking naked" in the street to "urinating in a woman's suitcase".
The Evening News has obtained a breakdown of arrests for the city centre where police are regularly called to break-up fights and deal with drunken clubbers.

The figures show that between February and April this year, the number of arrests for breach of the peace rose 36 per cent when compared to the same period last year.

The Cowgate, George Street, Greenside Place, Lothian Road and West Tollcross top the table.

Among the more bizarre incidents revealed is a drunk charged for placing a woman in George Street in a "state of alarm" by "urinating in her suitcase and refusing to desist". Another charge from February in the Cowgate, details how a high-spirited reveller was accused of "stripping to underwear and running frolicking through street" to the "alarm" of passers-by.

Chief Inspector Kevin Murray, who is responsible for coordinating city centre policing, said: "The majority of the activity is in the early hours of the morning so it would be proper to suggest that the majority of these incidents are related to alcohol."

In the Cowgate, arrests rose by 130 per cent. The majority of the 46 arrests were for shouting and swearing, often at police. Eleven arrests were for fighting.

One man was caught "vaulting over a fence into the smoking area of a nightclub", while another was arrested in March for exposing himself.

Arrests in George Street were up by almost a third, with an arrest for "headbutting a police car".

One person was arrested for lying in front of moving traffic.

Chief Inspector Murray said the rise in recorded incidents has coincided with a marked fall in arrests for minor assault.

He said: "I would like to think that this means our officers have been able to nip this kind of behaviour in the bud, before it escalated to more serious crime.

"The reduction in minor assaults is, to my mind, a positive indicator that the multi-agency team out on the streets are addressing antisocial behaviour before it leads to violence."

City Centre councillor Charles Dundas, a Liberal Democrat, said: "I have nothing else to attribute it to other than good police work."

The cowgate should be closed down it is just a mess, too many pubs and students, then again if we did that they would move somewhere else so maybe just leave them where they are.

Arrests in George Street were up by almost a third, with an arrest for "headbutting a police car". - seriously they arrested someone for headbutting a police vehicle? I would love to know what the sentence for that one was.

#2 It doesnt matter its the Cowgate or not trouble will happen as the article states arrests in George St up by almost a third and its a lot of trendy poser type bars in that neck of the woods.

And yet the Scotsman fuelled council persecution of Studio 24 with false claims it had been closed down!

The licensing board take no notice of the number of offences related to George St pubs/clubs because that's where the 'beautiful' people drink or to the Omni because it's a nice shiny new development!

#4 do you mean to say those chinless wonders and hooray henrys had the gall to cause mayhem, a few champers and lets run riot chaps
yet the courts will tell them beat it and behave
joe bloggs will be fined ,and fined enough to cover hooray henry and chums misbehaviour
if drunk and cause mayhem, then set fines of say £500 should make a few pull in their horns
urinators should be made to clean up their mess, and pay compensation for causing offence

If I remember rightly Studio 24 was accused of being out of control due to 40 police call outs over a couple of years.

Compare to 46 arrests, in the Cowgate, in 3 months. There's not that many pubs in the Cowgate. At least one of those places must be shut down in that case?

Like moving on from urinating in the street to doing something stinky and brown?

I love police language "urinating in her suitcase and refusing to desist"
"I say would you mind desisting?"
"Naw hen ahm in midstream"

I knew a kid at school who did the local bike behind the scout hall and to prevent knocking her up relieved himself in her handbag!

#7 good point Harrypots, the persecution of Club 24 has an ulterior motive, as it's valubale land that the Cooncil thinks should be parcelled up with the Caltongate nonesense. Look close enough and you will find Clowncillors or their cronies run the pubs in Gorge Street and the Om(my God did ye see that?)ni centre, broon envelopes, nods & winks..........

The students can be a pain in the neck but by and large they're pretty harmless. The real problem is caused by the fag-smoking, TK Maxx-wearing, uneducated schemie dross coming into the city centre and causing bother. Even the ones who've achieved something in their lives, eg professional footballers, have no idea how to behave in a civilized manner.

an arrest for "headbutting a police car"

What happens if a drunkered head butts my car whilst I'm doing 30mph - can I claim off him for damage......

roadstohell,

Can't the decent folk of Edinburgh organise wome kind of travel passport, to stop shemie dross from entering the city centre, after say 7pm at night ?

I can't see flaw in this plan

#22 students are generally ok,,as you say its the schemie element who mostly make an a*se of themselves, guys with spiky haircuts and stripy pink tops and the lassies with false hair, nails, fake tan and tacky looking clothes"the bland generation"-into c*ap music, tacky nightclubs and being a pain in the b*m,on that point "true" schemies dont go out as they look out of place in a town pub in a white tracksuit, they tend to sit in each others grubby flats getting p*shed on buckfast and cheap cider(hard to get babysitters too for as many kids as they produce)
