MacAskill aims for gun limits

JUSTICE Secretary Kenny MacAskill has promised to step up his efforts for tougher controls on airguns.
Last week, he wrote to Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, proposing that Scotland should pilot a licensing scheme on behalf of the UK to restrict airguns to those involved in pest control or shooting clubs.

He said: "Any reformed firearms regime must incorporate stronger controls on air weapons – they are used in around half of firearms offences."

Edinburgh West Lib Dem MSP Margaret Smith said: "Airguns can be lethal weapons in the wrong hands and a registration scheme, like the existing scheme for firearms and shotguns, would ensure that air weapons were only sold to people who were considered fit."

There is a far bigger problem with illegal use of knives---which is already outlawed. Let's see them enforce the laws around them before inflicting yet more un-neccessary legislation on us.

Someone just committed multiple murder in Japan with a truck and a knife. Are we going to ban trucks and knives too?

These bed-wetting liberals should be told where to go. In a civilised society, people would be free to carry handguns to protect themselves and others from criminals.

It is absolutely ridiculous the scottish parliament cannot ban/regulate airguns.

Just shows what a mess labour made of devolution. Either sort it out or give us independence so we can have parties that can do things meaningful to improve peoples lives.

either u think it is all right for people to shoot each other or u should get out more.

when i was at school in the 80s i remember people bringing air guns to school and that was a decent enough school. Great fun aim at someones legs and try to get them to dance like some western. What does it matter if someone gets blinded.

Last yr when out for a jog along a nearby canal and there were some kids walking along with an air rifle. Not exactly what u are wanting to see during the day.

un-necessary? so it does not matter in ur head that a baby was killed by this sort of thing. it does not matter that it became apparent that fireman were routinely shot at like this.

#6 so u feel the legislation as it is currently is adaquate. The elected government of the day does not.

Yes it would help if we had a newspaper that could explain from the political parties perspective why current legislation is inadaquate.

But it is remarkably silly not to allow the government to change the law if they think it is inadaquate. I want to judge governments by results, not by having them claim they are hamstrung by not having the power to make changes to the law.

One thing i did notice when the previous legislation went through westminster was that it was the media were very confusing about what was allowed and what was not. ie labour botch the changes. Abit like they did with drug reclassification, it was not clear what the story was at the end of the day.

I would suggest that having a air gun register would be a good idea. Or probably better ban all air guns outwith gun clubs. This could mean they are only used within a controlled environment.

Problem is already having suggested 2 ideas and it shows that the law as it is is not adaquate as u suggest. But realistically that is a subjective opinion. That is why governments must have powers to change the laws and we should vote for parties that will implement policies we feel are correct.

Problem is the disgusting element within the labour party are willing to sell this as the snp looking for a fight when their own senior politicians agree with the strenghtening the air gun rules.

You obviously fail to realise that the first objective of a dictatorship is to disarm the population "for their own safety".

if u want to be taken seriously u should atleast ackowlege the link i posted showing the previous labour leader also wanting to crack down on air guns.

u also seem to be ignorant of the fact that they were talking about this prior to the election in which case it makes ur statement in #9 wrong.

Since ur remarks are more forceful i will do the same. U stated the existing legislations was strong enough to do what is necessary. That is clearly wrong as McConnell stated and i gave u 2 examples.

think u are losing the plot with that remark. what are u wanting to turn scotland into some barmy state in the us and play out a western film.

#11 So one of your "examples" is the junkie scum who shot the "little burden on society" produced by the junkie scum who sold him the drugs he was high on at the time. I've seen plenty of kids with airguns (before it was illegal for u17's) having fun and not bothering anyone. I note from your post that they obviously didn't shoot at or threaten you, as you would have obviously stated this. I'm certainly not "losing the plot" and would like to see Scotland be more like Switzerland, low crime rate, high standard of living, and incidentally a higher rate of gun ownership than the USA.
