A PROTEST in China's restive Muslim far west turned violent yesterday, with activists saying police fired shots into the air and used batons to disperse a crowd of nearly 1,000 people.
More than 300 people, mostly Muslim Uighurs, had gathered to demand an inquiry into a brawl between Uighur and Han Chinese workers in southern China, in which two people were said to have died.
