THERE are easier ways to experience the adventure and romance of a coast-to-coast road trip across the United States.
But, in the name of charity, a team of cyclists from Edinburgh and Linlithgow have signed up for seven days of hell, and are preparing to saddle up for a non-stop race across America.

The team members have already raised £20,000 for charity with t
heir entry in the non-stop relay, the Race Across America.

The six, all former colleagues at Scottish and Newcastle Breweries, will take it in turns to hit the road for three hours at a time, with a 15-hour break between each shift.

But even when they are out of the saddle, they will still be helping keep their team members on the road.

One of the riders, 40-year-old Andrew Bright, said: "It's 24/7, so the race never stops. It's not like the Tour de France, where they ride for a day and then go to a hotel and shower.

"We'll have what they call an RV – a recreational vehicle – which will go along with us and give us accommodation and a place to eat, and we should get some reasonable time to recover.

"We've got a fairly small support crew, so a lot of the riders will be involved in support – driving the vehicle, cooking some food, making sure people coming off their rides are fed and watered."

The cyclists, who call themselves The Caledonian Chain Gang, will set off from Oceanside in California on 20 June, and hope to arrive in Annapolis, Maryland, 3,000 miles and seven days later.

They will pass through deserts, the midwestern plains and the Rocky and Appalachian Mountain ranges.

Mr Bright, a technical director for an environmental and energy consultancy, said the cyclists had been training hard and were feeling confident.

"I think most of us spent time in our garages and hallways over the winter on indoor trainers and we're now outside doing 100-250 miles a week," he said.

"We've been very fortunate to have had a date at the velodrome in Manchester and got some advice from the GB Cycling coaches. They said that with our level of fitness it is within our capability but the challenge will be mentally coping with it."

Following their visit, GB Cycling team performance director, Dave Brailsford, said: "It's great to see these guys take on such an exciting adventure – this race will be a real test. We wish them all the best."

Mr Bright's fellow cyclists Charles Richardson and Dave Forrester live in Shandon, while Peter Loft, Phil Hedley and Simon Taylor all live in Linlithgow.

They are raising funds for several charities, including Cancer Research UK, Help for Heroes, the Alstrom Syndrome UK Support Group, Lothian Autistic Society and the Scottish Motor Neurone Disease Association, inspired by Mr Bright's mother-in-law, who died of the condition.

#2 I wonder how many dangerous, ignorant car drivers they will experience, like the ones here in Edinburgh.

That would be interesting. The yank polis don't muck about with things like that, as anyone who ever crossed the road without a green man could attest - the cops will just taser first, and ask questions later.

I wish these guys all the best but they are gonna have to keep their speed up to cover 3000 miles in 7 days. On average they will need to do 18MPH but with weather/hills/towns They'll need to be cycling at something like a steady 25MPH!
Here's wishing for flat hills and tail winds eh!?!

Many states allow a right turn on a red, so no, probably not.

Anyway, great luck to them, I hope it all turns out well.

Best of luck to them. I hope they don't meet the blinkered, entrenched attitudes which we have to endure bu some road-users in Edinburgh.

They are going West to East for precisely that reason. Wind is usually westerly meaning that they should have it on their backs most of the time. They are also doing it this was to get the bigs hills (Rockies) out of the way early on thereby taking the mental/psychological task out of the equation.

The middle of summer will be brutal, should have picked spring or fall. The deserts and southern humidity will knock their socks off.

very interesting. My advice is to be careful on the journey. Don't go too fast unless you're on a good road. It will give us Americans a diversion from the constant anti-Americanism that is spouted at us from around the world. Here is a link on that.

what a journey! They start in California and go east. Will they go through Death Valley in Nevada? That is the hottest spot in the US. In summer the temperatures are normally 125-135. The road from Los Angeles to Las Vegas goes through it. Almost nobody lives there.

They will climb the rocky mountains, the elevation will begin to go up long before they reach the mountain peak. For hundreds of miles it will slope upwards and then they'll have to climb the mountains. When they get over the crest they will have a huge downhill coast. When they reach eastern Colorado the land will be flat again and remain so until eastern Kansas where they will experience pleasant rolling hills of low altitude. There's such a long distance through Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania.

I wish that we Americans had our minds re-focused so that we could concern ourselves with our own country, our own prosperity and stop meddling around the world. We'd be so much better off. If the world had a choice between an isolationist america and an empire america, which would they prefer?

There are evil people leading our country leading us in an evil direction. That is why I take my location field from Psalms 137. We are a captive nation doing things we shouldn't. We should throw these evil people in jail and focus on improving out internal prosperity. That is what originally made our nation prominent and powerful. Now we are squandering our internal prosperity on behalf of an empire that doesn't even respect us much less represent us in our values or concerns.

Why are the Americans so blind? They vote republicans out and democrats in and then expect change. But the democrats keep the same policies as the republicans and there is no change. Why don't we vote them all out? We re-elect 98% of our congress every 2 years. This is insane. They are diverting money intended for our retirement funds and putting it to war. They are borrowing massively from forei

Good Luck gentlemen, especially in the western desert. Be careful, as you have not experienced real heat until you have traveled through the desert in the summer.

When I first visited the Phoenix, Arizona in August a few years ago, the heat I felt when the door opened exiting the airport terminal was like stepping into a oven.

SwampFox is telling the truth. and Death Valley in Nevada is routinely 15-20 degrees hotter than Phoenix. At the phoenix airport it is quite possible to land as late as 10 PM and step outside into 110 degrees F. the desert from here to california is hot too. The hot spots outside of Death Valley are Needles in CA, Bullhead City in Arizona, and Phoenix. come visit in the summertime, its best then.
