UN chief snubs opening of Beijing Olympics
THE UN secretary general has become the latest high-profile figure to miss the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.
Ban Ki-moon said "scheduling issues" would prevent him from travelling to the showpiece event, which has been dogged with controversy due to China's role in Tibet. Mr Ban's spokeswoman told a news conference: "The secretary general had conveyed to the Chinese government some months ago that he may not be in a position to accept the invitation due to scheduling issues."
The UN boss is planning "a substantive visit to China" instead, the spokeswoman said.
Human rights campaigners have called on world leaders to skip the opening ceremony on August 8 to protest against Beijing's ongoing crackdown in Tibet.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown and German Chancellor Angela Merkel will not be attending the opening, while French President Nicolas Sarkozy is considering staying away. US Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have called on President George Bush to boycott the ceremony.
