SOMALI pirates have hijacked another ship and are taking it and a French yacht with two French nationals aboard to their remote coastal base.
Gunmen from the Horn of Africa nation are holding about ten vessels for ransom at Eyl, a lawless former fishing harbour now used by gangs behind a sharp rise in attacks at sea.

They are already demanding more than $9 million to free two Malaysian tankers, a Japanese-managed bulk carrier and a Nigerian tugboat held there.

"The pirates are sailing to Eyl with the French yacht and another Egyptian ship that they hijacked last night," Hassan Muse Alore, the minister for minerals in northern Somalia's Puntland region, said yesterday from Eyl.

Egypt's foreign ministry confirmed the an Egyptian ship was seized, the state news agency Mena said.

Can't the U.S. marines do what they did to the Barbary Pirates way back when (and as mentioned in their Corps song)? Now here's a target the world would unanimously agree to wiping out.

By "wiping out" I assume you mean committing an act of war against Somalia.

To be honest, if the US really HAD to have a war, they may have been better advised to sort out Somalia, which has no effective government, rather than Iraq, which did and was reasonably stable.

Would the world unanimously agree? I somehow don't think so. Where would the objections come from? Religion. Attacking a place like Somalia would be like startting another Vietnam.

I would hazard a guess that many Iraqi's wouldn't call their lives under Saddam "stable". Legal or illegal, they are better off.

As for the pirates, might be time for these merchant ships to start packing a little heat. These tend to change when both sides are armed.
