Tour de France: Valverde puts down marker with first victory

ONE of the favourites for this year's Tour de France marked his card early by winning yesterday's opening stage. Spain's Alejandro Valverde won a thrilling 197km road stage from Brest to Plumelec to earn his first yellow jersey.

The course took the 180 riders through the cycling heartland of Brittany, with small hills, narrow roads and first-day nerves making crashes inevitable. Colombia's Mauricio Soler, last year's King of the Mountains, came off worst in a huge smash which lost him three minutes.

Scotland's David Millar rode strongly to 11th place, just a second behind Valverde.
