IN HIS penultimate race before the Olympics, Chris Hoy last night won the German Sprinters' Grand Prix in Cottbus, and sent out a warning sign to his rivals for gold in Beijing. The world sprint and keirin champion qualified third in the 200m time trial behind Theo Bos, the Dutch world record holder over 200m, with Australia's Mark French second.
There was a major shock in the first round, however, when Bos, unbeatable in the sprint events until Hoy inherited his crown, was defeated. He fought back through the 'repechage' rounds before being beaten and knocked out in the quarter-finals.
Hoy, meanwhile, beat French in two straight heats in the second round. His toughest opponent dispensed with, he progressed smoothly to the final, winning all his heats 2-0, and meeting Sebastian Douhrer of Germany. He won the final 2-0.
"I'm very pleased," said Hoy, "because there aren't many opportunities between now and the Olympics to score psychological points."
